Rewi Braithwaite
John Rewi Fergusson Braithwaite (25 September 1897 – 15 January 1987) was an association football player who represented New Zealand national football team, New Zealand, playing in New Zealand's first ever official international. Braithwaite made his full New Zealand debut in that country's inaugural A-international fixture, beating Australia national football team, Australia 3–1 on 17 June 1922 and ended his international playing career with six A-international caps to his credit, his final cap an appearance in a 4–1 win over Australia on 30 June 1923. Braithwaite later served as a St Kilda, New Zealand, St Kilda borough councillor, representing the New Zealand Labour Party, Labour Party. In the sport of association football, a defender is an Glossary of association football terms#O, outfield position whose primary role is to stop attacks during the game and prevent the opposition from scoring. Centre-backs are usually positioned in pairs, with one full-back on either side to their left and right, but can be played in threes with or without full-backs. Defenders fall into four main categories: centre-back, sweeper, full-back, and wing-back. The centre-back and full-back positions are essential in most modern formations. The sweeper and wing-back roles are more specialised for certain formations dependent on the manager's style of play and tactics.
