Revival Records
Revival Records is a British record label founded in 1971 by Andrew Cameron Miller and Ian Brown to issue the works of blues musicians of the Mississippi valley such as Fred McDowell and Johnny Woods, George Henry Bussey and Jim Bunkley, Charlie Burse and Will Shade, Mississippi Joe Callicott, Furry Lewis, R. L. Burnside, and Sleepy John Estes recorded in the 1960s by George Mitchell. The Mitchell recordings later have been reissued on the Rounder and the Fat Possum labels. Fat Possum Records is an American independent record label based in Water Valley and Oxford, Mississippi. At first Fat Possum focused almost entirely on recording previously unknown Mississippi blues artists (typically from Oxford or Holly Springs, Mississippi). George Mitchell (born January 9, 1944) is an American record producer and music historian. Born in Coral Gables, Florida, United States, and raised in Atlanta, Georgia, from the 1960s until the 1980s, he recorded blues musicians such as Jessie Mae Hemphill, Fred McDowell, Johnny Woods, George Henry Bussey and Jim Bunkley, Charlie Burse and Will Shade, Gus Cannon, Mississippi Joe Callicott, John Lee Ziegler, Jimmy Lee Williams, Furry Lewis, Houston Stackhouse, R. L. Burnside and Sleepy John Estes, later to be issued on Arhoolie Records (late 1960s), Revival Records (1971) and Rounder Records (from c. 1975) as 33 rpm albums, and then on Arhoolie (2000) and Fat Possum Records (2003 ff.) as CDs. Furry Lewis
Walter E. "Furry" Lewis (March 6, 1893 or 1899 – September 14, 1981) was an American country blues guitarist and songwriter from Memphis, Tennessee. He was one of the first of the blues musicians active in the 1920s to be brought out of retirement and given new opportunities to record during the folk blues revival of the 1960s. Life and career Lewis was born in Greenwood, Mississippi. His birth year is uncertain. Many sources give 1893, the date he gave in his later years, but the researchers Bob Eagle and Eric LeBlanc suggest 1899, based on his 1900 census entry, and other sources suggest 1895 or 1898. His family moved to Memphis when he was seven. He acquired the nickname "Furry" from childhood playmates. By 1908, he was playing solo at parties, in taverns, and on the street. He was also invited to play several dates with W. C. Handy's Orchestra. Mississippi Joe Callicott
"Mississippi" Joe Callicott (October 10, 1899 – May 1969) was an American Delta blues singer and guitarist. Callicott was born in Nesbit, Mississippi, United States. In 1929 he played second guitar in Garfield Akers' duet recording, "Cottonfield Blues", and in 1930 he recorded "Fare Thee Well Blues" and "Traveling Mama Blues" for the Brunswick label.Dixon, Godrich and Rye: Blues and Gospel Records 1890-1943, 4th Ed, OUP, p. 133 His "Love Me Baby Blues" has been covered by various artists, for example by Ry Cooder under the title "France Chance". Will Shade
William Shade Jr. (February 5, 1898 – September 18, 1966), known as Will Shade, was a Memphis blues musician, best known for his leadership of the Memphis Jug Band. He was commonly called Son Brimmer, a nickname from his grandmother Annie Brimmer (''son'' is short for ''grandson''). The name apparently stuck when other members of the band noticed that the ''sun'' bothered him and he used the ''brim'' of a hat to ''shade'' his eyes. Early life Shade was born in February 1898 in Memphis, Tennessee, to William Shade and Mary ( Brimmer). Mary was fourteen years old when he was born. After her husband's death from a gunshot wound in 1903, she married a member of the Banks family, but by 1920 she was a widow once again. Shade had two half brothers, Henry Banks and Robert Banks. He credited his mother with teaching him how to play the harmonica, his first instrument.
