Retsin
Retsin was an American indie rock band founded by Tara Jane O'Neil and Cynthia Nelson. History Retsin was founded in 1993 by O'Neil, who had played with Rodan, and Nelson, a member of Ruby Falls.Strong, Martin C. Their debut appeared in 1995, after they had appeared in the film '' Half-Cocked''; the pair toured extensively behind the album, sometimes adding a rhythm section in live shows. After playing live with Ida, the two groups did a recording together called Ida Retsin Family. Retsin's label, Simple Machines Records, went out of business in 1998, and they signed with Carrot Top Records for their next two full-lengths, the last of which appeared in 2001. Tara Jane O'Neil (born November 22, 1972) (surname sometimes written as "ONeil"; sometimes credited as TJO) is an American multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, audio recording engineer, and visual artist based out of Los Angeles, California, United States. Biography O'Neil is a multi-instrumentalist, composer, audio engineer and visual artist. She creates melodic and experimental music under her own name and in collaboration with friends. Her recordings and live performances range from solo singing to noise improvisations. TJO has composed and performed music and sound for films, theater, and dance performances, and written large and small ensemble experimental architectures. O'Neil began her music career as the bass guitarist and vocalist for the influential Louisville, Kentucky post-rock group Rodan. Ida is an indie rock band from New York City. They are known for their three-part harmonies; sparse, minimal, often quiet arrangements; and their three singer-songwriters. Their music shows strong folk, pop, punk, world, R&B, and American roots music influences, but there are also ''avant garde'' and experimental aspects to their sound. History The band began in 1991 when Daniel Littleton and Elizabeth Mitchell started recording and performing as a duo. Rodan was an American post-hardcore band from Louisville, Kentucky. The best known lineup of the band consisted of Jeff Mueller (guitar/vocals), Jason Noble (guitar/vocals), Tara Jane O'Neil (bass/vocals), and Kevin Coultas (drums). History 1992–1993: Formation, Aviary, early demos Rodan formed in Louisville, Kentucky, in 1992. After quickly passing through drummers Jon Cook and John Weiss, the band's roster was solidified by the addition of Kevin Coultas in 1993. In 1993, they recorded their ''Aviary'' demo, which saw limited release. Ruby Falls (band)
Ruby Falls was a New York City-based math rock band active from 1992 to 2000. Later in their history, the band consisted of entirely female musicians, leading M.R. Newmark of ''PopMatters'' to describe them as "the only all-female math-rock band of any significance". History Ruby Falls was formed in 1992. The band's founding members were lead vocalist and bass guitarist Cynthia Nelson, vocalists and guitarists Jennifer Rogers and Letha Rodman, and drummer Andrew Bordwin. In 1994, Bordwin left the band and was replaced by Rogers' sister, Laura. Indie rock is a Music subgenre, subgenre of rock music that originated in the United States, United Kingdom and New Zealand from the 1970s to the 1980s. Cynthia Lee Nelson (born August 19, 1955) is former FIS Alpine Ski World Cup, World Cup Alpine Skiing, alpine ski racer from the United States Ski Team, United States. Racing career Born and raised in Lutsen Township, Minnesota, Lutsen in northeastern Minnesota, Nelson's family ran the Lutsen Mountains, local ski area and she was on skis before the age of three. She raced in all five alpine disciplines, with a focus on Downhill (ski competition), downhill, and was on the World Cup squad of the United States Ski Team, U.S. Ski Team at age 16. The Sonora Pine
The Sonora Pine was an American indie rock band founded by Tara Jane O'Neil active from 1995 to 1997. History O'Neil formed the band after the breakup of Rodan in 1995, in which she played bass. After moving to New York City, she began working with guitarist Sean Meadows, formerly of Lungfish, and added violinist Samara Lubelski for local shows. They then moved back to Louisville, Kentucky, where Rodan had been based, and added Rodan's drummer, Kevin Coultas, for the recording of their debut album. Pianist Rachel Grimes, of the group Rachel's, made an appearance on this album, which was released by Quarterstick Records in 1996.The Sonora Pineat Allmusic Meadows left the group in 1997, and the group worked as a trio for their sophomore effort, also released on Quarterstick. Half-Cocked (film)
''Half-cocked'' is a cult music road movie, made in 1994 in Louisville, Nashville and Chattanooga. The movie tells the story about a group of high school teens who steal a van full of music equipment and pretend to be a band, called "Truckstop" (played by the band Rodan) in order to stay on the road. When the band starts playing gigs, their sound is largely inconsistent and incoherent, however, over time, the band becomes increasingly competent in their musicianship. The film puts much emphasis on the indie/alternative rock subculture. Many indie rock bands such as Polvo, Grifters, Freakwater, Versus, Slant 6, Rodan, Unwound, Helium, Sleepyhead, Crain, and Ruby Falls are featured in the movie. Members of Rodan and Grifters play in the movie as well as actors. The movie appeared in a small run on VHS and was unavailable for years until its 2007 re-release on DVD.
