Retrospectacle – The Supertramp Anthology
''Retrospectacle – The Supertramp Anthology'' is the first comprehensive compilation album by the English rock band Supertramp, released in October 2005. Overview As Supertramp's first career retrospective, ''Retrospectacle'' contains a compilation of the most popular songs, live tracks and favourite album tracks from all of their albums from ''Supertramp'' to ''Slow Motion'', including the live albums ''Paris'' and ''It Was the Best of Times''. It was released as either a single disc or a double album. Also, ''Retrospectacle'' marks the first appearance on an album of the single "Land Ho" and its B-side "Summer Romance". The version of "Land Ho" used on the compilation is the 1975 remix which the band intended to use on ''Crisis? What Crisis?'' but left off at the last minute, while "Summer Romance" is the original mix from the single. "Land Ho" was later rerecorded by Roger Hodgson for his 1987 solo album ''Hai Hai'' (with new lyrics). ''Classic Rock'' ranked ''Retrospec ...

Supertramp
Supertramp were an English rock band that formed in London in 1969. Marked by the individual songwriting of founders Roger Hodgson (vocals, keyboards, and guitars) and Rick Davies (vocals and keyboards), they are distinguished for blending progressive rock and pop styles as well as for a sound that relied heavily on Wurlitzer electric piano. The group's lineup changed numerous times throughout their career, with Davies being the only consistent member throughout the decades. Other longtime members included bassist Dougie Thomson, drummer Bob Siebenberg, and saxophonist John Helliwell. The band were initially a prog-rock group, but starting with their third album, ''Crime of the Century'' (1974), they began moving towards a more pop-oriented sound. They reached their commercial peak with 1979's ''Breakfast in America'', which yielded the international top 10 singles "The Logical Song", "Breakfast in America", "Goodbye Stranger", and " Take the Long Way Home". Their other top 4 ...

Remix
A remix (or reorchestration) is a piece of media which has been altered or contorted from its original state by adding, removing, or changing pieces of the item. A song, piece of artwork, book, video, poem, or photograph can all be remixes. The only characteristic of a remix is that it appropriates and changes other materials to create something new. Most commonly, remixes are a subset of audio mixing in music and song recordings. Songs may be remixed for a large variety of reasons: * to adapt or revise a song for radio or nightclub play * to create a stereo or surround sound version of a song where none was previously available * to improve the fidelity of an older song for which the original master has been lost or degraded * to alter a song to suit a specific music genre or radio format * to use some of the original song's materials in a new context, allowing the original song to reach a different audience * to alter a song for artistic purposes * to provide additional version ...

Give A Little Bit
"Give a Little Bit" is the opening song on Supertramp's 1977 album '' Even in the Quietest Moments...'' The song was released as a single that same year and became an international hit for the band, peaking at number 15 on the ''Billboard'' Pop Singles chart. It was a chart hit in the band's native UK, reaching number 29 on the UK Singles Chart. The single was re-released in 1992 to raise funds for the ITV Telethon Charity event, but failed to chart. Its writing credits are given to Rick Davies and Roger Hodgson, although it is a Hodgson composition. Hodgson and Davies shared writing credits from 1974 until 1983, when Hodgson left Supertramp. "Give a Little Bit" was first written by Hodgson when he was 19 or 20 years old before it was introduced to the band for recording five to six years later. Hodgson stated that the song was inspired by the Beatles' "All You Need Is Love", released during the love and peace movement of the 1960s. Drummer Bob Siebenberg recounted that "Roge ...

Dreamer (Supertramp Song)
"Dreamer" is a hit single from British band Supertramp's 1974 album ''Crime of the Century''. It peaked at number 13 on the UK Singles Chart in February 1975. In 1980, it appeared on the band's live album ''Paris''. This live version was also released as a single and hit number 15 on the US charts, number 36 in the Dutch Top 40, and number one on the Canadian Singles Chart. When "Dreamer" had been released in 1974, its B-side "Bloody Well Right" was more popular in North America leading it to chart instead, at No. 35 in the US and No. 49 in Canada, with "Dreamer" only charting in Canada, that being at No. 75. "Dreamer" also appeared on Roger Hodgson's album, '' Classics Live'', recorded on tour in 2010. Background "Dreamer" was composed by Roger Hodgson on his Wurlitzer piano at his mother's house when he was 19 years old. At that time he recorded a demo of the song using vocals, Wurlitzer, and banging cardboard boxes for percussion. Hodgson recalled, "I was excited – it was ...

Bloody Well Right
"Bloody Well Right" is a song by English rock band Supertramp from their 1974 album '' Crime of the Century''. It appeared as the B-side of the single " Dreamer" in 1974. Listeners in the United States preferred it to the A-side, and "Bloody Well Right" became their breakthrough hit in the country, peaking at number 35 on the ''Billboard'' Hot 100. Lyrical content Davies consciously linked the song to the album's opening track "School" with the line "So you think your schooling is phoney", helping to perpetuate the false impression that '' Crime of the Century'' is a concept album. According to Hodgson, any unifying thread beyond that was left to the listener's imagination. ''Ultimate Classic Rock'' critic Nick DeRiso stated "Bloody Well Right" shares the theme with "School" of "questioning the education system." Structure The song begins with Rick Davies playing a Wurlitzer electric piano 51-second piano solo, leading into the rest of the band joining in. There is then a g ...

Crime Of The Century (album)
''Crime of the Century'' is the third studio album by the English rock band Supertramp, released in September 1974 on A&M Records. ''Crime of the Century'' was Supertramp's commercial breakthrough in many countries, most notably in the UK, Canada and Germany where it peaked in the Top 5 while also making the Top 20 in Australia and France. It was an improvement over their previous sales in the US, but still only peaked at No. 38, with the US hit being "Bloody Well Right". "School" was another popular track, particularly at album rock-oriented radio stations. The album was eventually certified Gold in the US in 1977 after the release of '' Even in the Quietest Moments...''. In Canada, it was eventually certified Diamond (sales of one million copies). The album was Supertramp's first to feature drummer Bob Siebenberg (at the time credited as Bob C. Benberg), saxophone and clarinet player and vocalist John Helliwell, bassist Dougie Thomson, and co-producer Ken Scott. The album ha ...

School (Supertramp Song)
"School" is a song co-written by Rick Davies and Roger Hodgson of British rock band Supertramp, and included in the band's third and breakthrough 1974 album, ''Crime of the Century'', of which it was the opening track. It was later released as a single in 1983, backed with "Oh Darling", a track from their 1979 album ''Breakfast in America'', and charted at number 27 in Netherlands in 1989. In 2020, the song peaked at number 1 as its highest radio airplay chart in Spain. Writing and recording Hodgson stated that "'School was one of the songs that Rick aviesand I collaborated on. It was my song basically but Rick helped me with a lot of the lyrics. The piano solo was his, and it worked really well." Music and lyrics The song starts with a long, slow harmonica intro. Hodgson’s verse vocals are first only above his flanged guitar, and then an elongated, strummed guitar section before the song finally fully kicks in. Davies later provides a bright piano lead. It has been described as ...

Single (music)
In music, a single is a type of release, typically a song recording of fewer tracks than an LP record or an album. One can be released for sale to the public in a variety of formats. In most cases, a single is a song that is released separately from an album, although it usually also appears on an album. In other cases a recording released as a single may not appear on an album. Despite being referred to as a single, in the era of music downloads, singles can include up to as many as three tracks. The biggest digital music distributor, the iTunes Store, accepts as many as three tracks that are less than ten minutes each as a single. Any more than three tracks on a musical release or thirty minutes in total running time is an extended play (EP) or, if over six tracks long, an album. Historically, when mainstream music was purchased via vinyl records, singles would be released double-sided, i.e. there was an A-side and a B-side, on which two songs would appear, one on each si ...
