New South Wales Legislative Council
The New South Wales Legislative Council, often referred to as the upper house, is one of the two chambers of the parliament of the Australian state of New South Wales. The other is the Legislative Assembly. Both sit at Parliament House in the state capital, Sydney. It is normal for legislation to be first deliberated on and passed by the Legislative Assembly before being considered by the Legislative Council, which acts in the main as a house of review. The Legislative Council has 42 members, elected by proportional representation in which the whole state is a single electorate. Members serve eight-year terms, which are staggered, with half the Council being elected every four years, roughly coinciding with elections to the Legislative Assembly. Graham Freudenberg
Norman Graham Freudenberg (; 12 May 1934 – 26 July 2019) was an Australian author and political speechwriter who worked with the Australian Labor Party for over forty years, beginning when he was appointed Arthur Calwell's press secretary in June 1961. Early life Freudenberg was born in Brisbane. His father was a soldier who fought at Gallipoli and, being a patriot, he named his son after a former colonial Governor of Queensland, Field Marshall Sir Henry Norman. Freudenberg was educated at the Church of England Grammar School in Brisbane. He then studied journalism in Melbourne and worked for some years with the ''Melbourne Sun''. Career Freudenberg wrote over a thousand speeches for several leaders of the Australian Labor Party at both the New South Wales state and federal level. Marlene Goldsmith
Marlene Mary Herbert Goldsmith (29 September 1942 – 13 April 2000) was an Australian politician. She was a Liberal member of the New South Wales Legislative Council. Born Marlene Herbert in Gunnedah to parents Cecil and Esme, and brothers Warwick and Mark. Marlene studied to be a teacher, receiving a Bachelor of Arts She received a Commonwealth Scholarship in 1960. resulting in teaching at St. Mary's College, Gunnedah where she was held in high regard. She was then awarded a teaching scholarship to the University of Minnesota in 1978 (and a PhD), and a Thurston Scholarship in Foundations of Education in 1981. She taught in both the United States and in New South Wales, and was also a research consultant. She married Ian Goldsmith, with whom she had a daughter. She was also a branch president of the Liberal Party. In 1988, Marlene Goldsmith was elected to the New South Wales Legislative Council as a Liberal member. Beryl Evans (politician)
Beryl Alice Evans (née Williams; 25 February 1922 – 16 May 2006) was an Australian politician. Early career Born to David Reginald Williams and Mabel Lawson in Sydney, she was educated at Methodist Ladies' College in Burwood before joining the Royal Australian Air Force (Women's Auxiliary Australian Air Force) on 12 November 1942. She was a drill and physical training instructor, rising to the rank of Sergeant before her commission in 1944. When she was discharged on 25 September 1945 she had attained the rank of section officer. She was subsequently a farmer and grazier; she had married Kenneth Graham Bowman in 1944, with whom she had two sons, Christopher and Gawain. In 1962 she was elected to Coolah Shire Council, where she remained until 1971. She was the unsuccessful Liberal candidate for the state electorate of Burrendong in 1973. The Liberal Party of Australia (New South Wales Division), commonly known as the New South Wales Liberals, is the state division of the Liberal Party of Australia in New South Wales. The party currently governs in New South Wales in coalition with the National Party of Australia (NSW). The party is part of the federal Liberal Party which is in opposition nationally. Following the Liberal Party's formation in October 1944, the NSW division of the Liberal Party was formed in January 1945. For the following months, the Democratic Party and Liberal Democratic Party joined the Liberal Party and were replaced by the new party's NSW division. Virginia Chadwick
Virginia Anne Chadwick AO (19 December 194417 September 2009) was a Liberal Member of the New South Wales Legislative Council from 1978 to 1999. She was the first NSW female Minister for Education; the first female President of the New South Wales Legislative Council; and Chair and CEO of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority. Rolo Mestman Tapier (1 July 1945 – 3 December 2007) otherwise known as Lord Bloody Wog Rolo was an activist and colourful eccentric Sydney identity. He initially achieved notoriety for his anti-monarchist statements and activities and became one of the early members of BUGAUP (Billboard Utilising Graffitists Against Unhealthy Promotions). His provocative and sometimes confrontational manner, particularly with police, saw him detained or arrested on minor charges a number of times. Marie Bignold
Marie May Bignold (14 September 1927 – 11 October 2018) was an Australian politician. Born in Kiama, the daughter of solicitor Owen James Thomas and Sylvia May Reid, she studied law at the University of Sydney before being admitted as a solicitor in 1950. She married Justice Neal Bignold, a Judge of the Land and Environment Court of New South Wales, with whom she has one daughter, Alicia. In 1984, she was appointed to the New South Wales Legislative Council for the Call to Australia Group, which was led by Fred Nile. Grey Power
Grey Power (or Greypower) was an Australian political party and lobby group, first registered in 1983. At the federal elections of 1984 and 1987 it ran candidates, but on both occasions these candidates (who included former Liberal cabinet minister Bill Wentworth) did poorly. The group was designed to represent the elderly vote, advocating issues dealing with aged care and a mature perspective on national policy; hence the name "grey power". The party's state president in New South Wales was Robert Clark, an anti-immigration campaigner and the founder of the Immigration Control Association, which advocated for a return to the White Australia policy. Independent EFF (Enterprise, Freedom, Family) was a minor Australian political party that was active between 1987 and 1999. It was unsuccessful in electing candidates. The party was founded in 1987 by Blacktown Deputy Mayor Joe Bryant, and its positions included reducing workers' compensation, instituting voluntary unionism, and the elimination of unemployment benefits and the flat tax.
