Resource Management Act 1991
The Resource Management Act (RMA) passed in 1991 in New Zealand is a significant, and at times, controversial Act of Parliament. The RMA promotes the sustainable management of natural and physical resources such as land, air and water. New Zealand's Ministry for the Environment describes the RMA as New Zealand's principal legislation for environmental management. The RMA and the decisions made under it by district and regional councils and in courts affect both individuals and businesses in large numbers, and often in very tangible ways. The Act has variously been attacked for being ineffective in managing adverse environmental effects, or overly time-consuming and expensive and concerned with bureaucratic restrictions on legitimate economic activities. In February 2021, the Government confirmed that the RMA is to be replaced by three separate acts. The New Zealand Parliament ( mi, Pāremata Aotearoa) is the unicameral legislature of New Zealand, consisting of the King of New Zealand ( King-in-Parliament) and the New Zealand House of Representatives. The King is usually represented by his governor-general. Before 1951, there was an upper chamber, the New Zealand Legislative Council. The New Zealand Parliament was established in 1854 and is one of the oldest continuously functioning legislatures in the world. It has met in Wellington, the capital of New Zealand, since 1865. Ecosystem
An ecosystem (or ecological system) consists of all the organisms and the physical environment with which they interact. These biotic and abiotic components are linked together through nutrient cycles and energy flows. Energy enters the system through photosynthesis and is incorporated into plant tissue. Guy Salmon
Guy Winston Salmon (born 1949) is a New Zealand environmentalist. Salmon was born in 1949; his father was John Salmon. He is executive director of the Ecologic Foundation, an independent policy think tank. He has been involved with this organisation in its various forms since the 1970s. In the early 1970s, Salmon was a prominent member of the environmentalist Values Party. In 1990 and 1991, Salmon was a member of Simon Upton's review group that finalised the definition of sustainable management included in the Resource Management Act 1991. He stood as a candidate for Parliament on behalf of the Progressive Greens in 1996 and the New Zealand National Party in the 2002 election. Anthony Randerson
Anthony Penrose Randerson (born 1949) is a New Zealand retired jurist. In 1990/91, he chaired the group that considered Geoffrey Palmer's bill that became the Resource Management Act 1991 (RMA). In 2019/20, he chaired the group that recommended for the RMA to be abolished. Biography Randerson was born in 1949, the youngest of three boys.
