Republican Party (Iceland)
The Republican Party ( is, Lýðveldisflokkurinn) was a political party in Iceland. It was formed in 1953 as the result of the split from the Independence Party (Iceland), Independence Party. A party with an identical name was officially granted list letter I on 8 March 2013, and started to compose a candidate list for participation in the 2013 Icelandic parliamentary election. It is, however, not the same party that participated in the 1953 election, although the name was chosen as a homage to the party. Iceland
Iceland ( is, Ísland; ) is a Nordic island country in the North Atlantic Ocean and in the Arctic Ocean. Iceland is the most sparsely populated country in Europe. Iceland's capital and largest city is Reykjavík, which (along with its surrounding areas) is home to over 65% of the population. Independence Party (Iceland)
The Independence Party ( is, Sjálfstæðisflokkurinn) is a Liberal conservatism, liberal-conservative List of political parties in Iceland, political party in Iceland. It is currently the largest party in the Althing, Alþingi, with 17 seats. The chairman of the party is Bjarni Benediktsson (born 1970), Bjarni Benediktsson and the vice chairman of the party is Þórdís Kolbrún R. Gylfadóttir. It was formed in 1929 through a merger of the Conservative Party (Iceland), Conservative Party and the Liberal Party (Iceland, historical), Liberal Party. This united the two parties advocating the dissolution of the Union of Denmark and Iceland; dissolution was achieved in 1944, during the German occupation of Denmark. 2013 Icelandic Parliamentary Election
Parliamentary elections were held in Iceland on 27 April 2013. Fifteen parties contested the elections, compared to just seven in the previous elections. Parliamentary elections were held in Iceland on 28 June 1953. Dieter Nohlen & Philip Stöver (2010) ''Elections in Europe: A data handbook'', p961 The Independence Party remained the largest party in the Lower House of the Althing, winning 14 of the 35 seats. Electoral system The elections were conducted under two electoral systems. Twenty-one members were elected in single-member constituencies via first-past-the-post voting, while the remainder were elected using D'Hondt method proportional representation: twelve members in two-member constituencies, eight members in Reykjavík, and eleven from a single national compensatory list. To earn national list seats, a party had to win at least one constituency seat. In constituencies electing two or more members, within the party list, voters had the option to re-rank the candidates and could also strike a candidate out.
