Renée Carl
Renée Carl (10 June 1875 – 31 July 1954) was a French actress of the silent era. She was born in Fontenay-le-Comte, Vendée, France, and died in Paris, France. Between 1907 and 1937, she appeared in 186 films. A favorite of film director Louis Feuillade, she appeared in at least 150 films directed by him, including the short ''Bébé'' and '' Bout de Zan'' comedies. Of the many characters she played in Feuillade's films, perhaps her most famous portrayal was that of Lady Beltham, mistress of the notorious Fantômas in the serial of the same name. She makes an uncredited appearance, as "L'Andalouse," in '' The Vampires''. In 1922, she directed and starred in the film '' A Shout from the Abyss'', also known as '' Un cri dans l'abîme''. In a 1924 interview for '' Mon Ciné'' magazine, she stated that she was introduced to film-making through her friend Léonie Richard. Les Vampires
''Les Vampires'' is a 1915–16 French silent crime serial film written and directed by Louis Feuillade. Set in Paris, it stars Édouard Mathé, Musidora and Marcel Lévesque. The main characters are a journalist and his friend who become involved in trying to uncover and stop a bizarre underground Apache gang, known as The Vampires (who are not the mythological beings their name suggests). The serial consists of ten episodes, which vary greatly in length. Being roughly 7 hours long, it is considered one of the longest films ever made. It was produced and distributed by Feuillade's company Gaumont. ''Fantômas'' () is a French silent crime film serial directed by Louis Feuillade, based on the novel of the same name. The five episodes, initially released throughout 1913–14, were restored under the direction of Jacques Champreaux and released in this new form in 2006. Series The series consists of five episodes, each an hour to an hour and a half in length, which end in cliffhangers. Episodes one and three end with Fantômas making a last-minute escape, and the end of the second entry has Fantômas blowing up Lady Beltham's manor house with Juve and Fandor, the two heroes, still inside.
