René Benausse
René Benausse (born 23 September 1929 in Carcassonne – died 29 November 2013 in Villalier) was a French rugby league footballer who played in the 1960s. He played at the international level for France, and at club level for AS Carcassonne and FC Lézignan XIII playing at . He is the older brother of fellow rugby league footballer Gilbert Benausse, alongside which he played for Lézignan. Playing career At club level, Benausse played first for AS Carcassonne, and then for FC Lézignan XIII. He was capped twice for France and took part at the 1960 Rugby League World Cup. Both of this international caps were two test matches against Great Britain. The French rugby league championship (french: Le Championnat de France de Rugby à XIII) has been the major rugby league tournament for semi-professional and professional clubs in France since the sport was introduced to the country in the 1930s. Except for the first season, a play-off structure leading to a championship final has always been used to determine the fate of the championship. 1960 Rugby League World Cup
The 1960 Rugby League World Cup was the third staging of the tournament and the first Rugby League World Cup to be held in Great Britain. The same format as used in 1957 was used, with a group stage leading to a final table. The 1960 World Cup raised problems which had not really affected the previous tournaments. Live television of complete games was held responsible for lower than anticipated attendances, the largest crowd being the 32,773 which gathered at Odsal for the deciding match between Australia and the hosts.
