Renown Sports Club
Renown Sports Club is a Sri Lankan professional football club based in Kotahena, Colombo. Founded in 1981 by the Peeris Brothers, the club currently competes in the Sri Lanka Champions League. History Renown SC was founded in 1981. The club emerged champions in the Sri Lanka Champions League four times in 1990, 1993, 1994 and 2009. They became the first Sri Lankan club to sign numerous Indian players for a single season, signing Shaji Varghese, Shibu Stellas and Shyam Simon (all from Kerala) in 2004. In 2004, Renown participated in the 110th IFA Shield in 2004, in Kolkata. They appeared in the 2010 edition of AFC President's Cup, but could not proceeded to the knockout stages. Home ground Renown uses Sugathadasa Stadium in Colombo, as its home ground. The stadium has a capacity of nearly 25,000 spectators. Sugathadasa Stadium
Sugathadasa Stadium is a multi-purpose stadium in Colombo, Sri Lanka. It is currently used for football, rugby union, and athletics. The stadium holds 25,000 people and has an on-site hotel. History The concept of an outdoor sporting stadium was initially raised by V. A. Sugathadasa, the Mayor of Colombo (1956–57, 1963–65), the country's first Minister of Sports (1966–70) and Chairman of the National Olympic and Commonwealth Games Committee. Construction of the stadium commenced on 16 January 1957 and was completed on 16 December 1962. The stadium was named after Sugathadasa, as he donated the land it was built on. In 1991, an indoor stadium was constructed on the site by the Mitsui Company for the 1991 South Asian Games. Stadium usage The 1991 and 2006 South Asian Games were held in Sugathadasa Stadium. POMIS Cup
The POMIS Cup (known fully as President of Maldives Invitational Soccer Cup) is an international club football tournament kicked off in 1987 to promote the standards of local football in Maldives. This is the only international soccer club tournament held in the Maldives. Due to various reasons, Football Association of Maldives (FAM) was not able to stage the tournament in the years of 2002 and 2004 to 2014. In 2003, two foreign clubs from India and Sri Lanka competed in the cup, Mahindra United and Negombo Youth. The AFC President's Cup was an annual international association football competition between domestic clubs sides run by the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) held between 2005 and 2014. The competition targeted emerging football nations, and was set below the AFC Champions League and AFC Cup competitions. Competition format Between 8 and 12 teams participated in each edition of the competition. From 2005 to 2007, 8 clubs were placed into two groups of 4 teams.
