Renee Tajima-Peña
Renee Tajima-Peña (born 1958) is an American filmmaker whose work focuses on immigrant communities, race, gender and social justice. Her directing and producing credits include the documentaries '' Who Killed Vincent Chin?'', '' No Más Bebés'', ''My America...or Honk if You Love Buddha'', ''Calavera Highway'', ''Skate Manzanar'', ''Labor Women'' and the 5-part docuseries ''Asian Americans''. Biography Tajima-Peña attended John Muir High School in Pasadena, California, and later received her bachelor's degree ''cum laude'' from Harvard University's Radcliffe College, where she majored in East Asian Studies and sociology. While at Harvard, she was co-chairperson of the United Front Against Apartheid. Tajima-Peña has been deeply involved in the Asian American independent film community as an activist, writer, and filmmaker. James Wong Howe
Wong Tung Jim, A.S.C. (; August 28, 1899 – July 12, 1976), known professionally as James Wong Howe (Houghto), was a Chinese-born American cinematographer who worked on over 130 films. During the 1930s and 1940s, he was one of the most sought after cinematographers in Hollywood due to his innovative filming techniques. Howe was known as a master of the use of shadow and one of the first to use deep-focus cinematography, in which both foreground and distant planes remain in focus. Born in Canton (Guangzhou), China, Howe immigrated to the United States at age five and grew up in Washington. He was a professional boxer during his teenage years, and later began his career in the film industry as an assistant to Cecil B. DeMille. ''Independent Lens'' is a weekly television series airing on PBS featuring documentary films made by independent filmmakers. Past seasons of ''Independent Lens'' were hosted by Angela Bassett, Don Cheadle, Susan Sarandon, Edie Falco, Terrence Howard, Maggie Gyllenhaal, America Ferrera, Mary-Louise Parker, and Stanley Tucci, who served two stints as host from 2012-2014.
