Rene Toupin
Rene Ernest Toupin (May 15, 1934 – March 15, 2014), born in Saint Boniface, Winnipeg, Saint Boniface, Manitoba, was a politician in Manitoba, Canada. He was a New Democratic Party of Manitoba, New Democratic member of the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba from 1969 to 1977, and served as a cabinet minister in the government of Edward Schreyer. Toupin was educated at Université Laval, and returned to Manitoba after his graduation. He was the Chair of the La Salle School Board from 1962 to 1966, and Chair of the La Salle Credit Union from 1962 to 1969. He was also a member of the Societe Franco-Manitobaine. Saint Boniface, Winnipeg
St-Boniface (or Saint-Boniface) is a city ward and neighbourhood in Winnipeg. Along with being the centre of the Franco-Manitoban community, it ranks as the largest francophone community in Western Canada. It features such landmarks as the St. Boniface Cathedral, Boulevard Provencher, the Provencher Bridge, Esplanade Riel, St. Boniface Hospital, the Université de Saint-Boniface, and the Royal Canadian Mint. The area covers east-central and southeast Winnipeg, including ('Old St. Boniface'), and consists of the neighbourhoods of Norwood West, Norwood East, Windsor Park, Niakwa Park, Niakwa Place, Southdale, Southland Park, Royalwood, Sage Creek, and Island Lakes, among others, plus a large industrial area. 1973 Manitoba General Election
The 1973 Manitoba general election was held on June 28, 1973 to elect Members of the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Manitoba, Canada. It was won by the social-democratic New Democratic Party, which took 31 of 57 seats to win government in its own right for the first time. The Progressive Conservative Party finished second with 21, while the Manitoba Liberal Party took the remaining five. A right-of-centre municipal organization known as the Independent Citizens' Election Committee convinced the Progressive Conservative and Liberal parties to avoid competing against each other in certain Winnipeg-area ridings, such that a single "anti-socialist" alternative to the NDP could be offered. Franco-Manitoban People
Franco-Manitobans (french: Franco-Manitobains) are French Canadians or Canadian francophones living in the province of Manitoba. According to the 2016 Canadian Census, 40,975 residents of the province stated that French was their mother tongue. In the same census, 148,810 Manitobans claimed to have either full or partial French ancestry. There are several Franco-Manitoban communities throughout Manitoba, although the majority are based in either the Winnipeg Capital Region or the Eastman Region. The first francophones to enter the region were fur traders during the late 17th century, with the first French settlers arriving in the subsequent century. Francophones constituted the majority of the region's non-First Nations population until the mid 19th century, when anglophones became the linguistic majority. Bob Anderson (politician)
Robert Colin Anderson (born May 5, 1939) is a politician in Manitoba, Canada. Born in Saint Boniface, Manitoba, he was a Progressive Conservative member of the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba from 1977 to 1981. The son of Robert Anderson and Lillian Marie Kraushar, he was born in St. Boniface, was educated at the University of Manitoba and worked as a farmer. He served as a councillor in the municipality of Springfield, Manitoba, located east of Winnipeg, from 1968 to 1972. In 1966, he married Jean Edith Shelfontuk. He was elected to the Manitoba legislature in the provincial election of 1977, defeating incumbent New Democrat Rene Toupin by almost 2,000 votes in the riding of Springfield.
