Remington Short Action Ultra Magnum
Remington Ultra Magnum, or RUM, refers to a "family" of cartridges developed between 1999 and 2002 by Remington Arms. All of the RUM cartridges are based on the ''.404 Jeffery'' non-belted magnum cartridge. There is a long-case line, as well as a shortened version designed to fit a short rifle action (such as a .308 Winchester). The long case is very large and provides performance that exceeds existing commercial magnums, such as the .300 Winchester Magnum and .300 Weatherby Magnum. The short design is the same idea as used in the Winchester Short Magnum cartridges. The shorter cartridges are known as Remington Short Action Ultra Magnum, RSAUM, RSUM, or SAUM. A cartridge or a round is a type of pre-assembled firearm ammunition packaging a projectile (bullet, shot, or slug), a propellant substance (usually either smokeless powder or black powder) and an ignition device (primer) within a metallic, paper, or plastic case that is precisely made to fit within the barrel chamber of a breechloading gun, for the practical purpose of convenient transportation and handling during shooting. Super Magnum
A super magnum is a longer and/or more powerful version of a " magnum" cartridge. Although the term "super magnum" typically refers to a handgun cartridge, created by lengthening an existing straight-case design, it can also refer to rifle and shotgun cartridges, such as the .17 Winchester Super Magnum and the 3" 12 Gauge Super Magnum. In this case, it simply denotes that it is of greater power than existing "magnums" of similar caliber, similar to other designations such as "Remington Ultra Magnum". The most widespread of these cartridges are the "SuperMag" family of super-magnum handgun cartridges that were proposed and tested by Elgin Gates in the 1970s. Winchester Super Short Magnum
Winchester Super Short Magnum, or WSSM is a line of rebated rim bottlenecked centerfire short magnum cartridges introduced by the U.S. Repeating Arms Company (''Winchester Inc''). It is a further development of the Winchester Short Magnum concept utilizing smaller bullets, but of a still higher velocity. History Winchester and Browning partnered to create a new shorter version of the popular WSM (Winchester Short magnum) case. The new "super short" case was to be based on design principles currently proving successful in benchrest competition, such as the 6 mm PPC and 6 mm BR Remington. In 2003 the first cartridges of this design, the .223 and .243 Winchester Super Short Magnums (WSSM), were introduced. The .25 WSSM was added to the family in 2004. .300 Remington Short Action Ultra Magnum (also known as 300 RSAUM, 300 RSUM or 300 Rem SAUM) is a .30 caliber short magnum Cartridge (firearms), cartridge that is a shortened version of the Remington 300 Ultra Mag, both of which derive from the .404 Jeffery case. The Remington Short Ultra Mag was put on the market shortly after Winchester released its .300 Winchester Short Magnum, 300 WSM round in 2001, resulting in the Winchester product getting the marketing advantage that has eclipsed the Remington offering. 7mm Remington Short Action Ultra Magnum
Remington introduced the 7mm Short Action Ultra Magnum (SAUM) cartridge in 2002 to compete with the 7mm Winchester Short Magnum cartridge. It was designed specifically for the Remington Model Seven Magnum rifle, and intended primarily for long-range hunting use. The difference in velocity between the 7mm SAUM cartridge and the 7mm Winchester Short Magnum (WSM) is less than 50 feet per second; they are almost ballistic twins. Both the 7mm SAUM and the 7mm WSM achieve optimal ballistic results when using bullet weights from 120 to 160 grains. The 7mm SAUM suffered from being released later than the 7mm WSM, and very few manufacturers chambering rifles in this caliber. 338 Remington Ultra Magnum
The .338 Remington Ultra Magnum is a .338 caliber rifle cartridge introduced by Remington Arms in 2002. Design It is a beltless, rebated rim cartridge based on the .300 Remington Ultra Magnum case shortened .090" and necked-up to accept a 0.338-inch (.338 caliber) bullet. The .338 Remington Ultra Magnum has a similar case capacity as the .338 Lapua Magnum and somewhat lower than that of the .338-378 Weatherby Magnum. It is one of the most powerful .338-caliber rounds in production. Because this cartridge already operates at very high pressures (65,000 PSI), handloaders cannot realize significant velocity improvements over factory ammunition as many handloaders have done over the years with more conventional, lower pressure rounds. 7mm Remington Ultra Magnum
The 7mm Remington Ultra Magnum or 7mm RUM is a 7mm rifle cartridge introduced by Remington Arms in 2001. Overview The 7mm RUM was created using the .404 Jeffery case which was also used to develop the .375 RUM .300 RUM, and .338 RUM . By necking down the .300 RUM to suit the .284 or 7mm projectile, Remington produced a non-belted case with a head diameter that is somewhat larger than the belt diameter of the original belted numbers. The resulting case has significantly more capacity than any conventional belted magnum. Compared to the 7mm Remington Magnum, top 7mm RUM loads deliver 25% more energy at 300 yards. Such performance demands a price and in this case, that is a large muzzle blast, sharp recoil and short barrel life. The 7mm Ultra Magnum boasts the largest case of any commercial 7mm cartridge.
