"Release Me" is a song by Australian singer songwriter Deborah Conway. It was released as the third single from her debut studio album ''String of Pearls'' (1991). It peaked at number 58 in Australia in February 1992. In the following month Conway performed it with Vika and Linda at the ARIA Music Awards of 1992. Dan Condon of Double J, in 2019, rated it as one of seven great performances at the ARIA Awards over 33 years. Deborah Conway
Deborah Ann Conway (born 8 August 1959) is an Australian rock singer-songwriter and guitarist, and had a career as a model and actress. She was a founding member of the 1980s rock band Do-Ré-Mi with their top 5 hit "Man Overboard". Conway performs solo and has a top 20 hit single with "It's Only the Beginning" (1991). The associated album, '' String of Pearls'', also peaked in the top 20. She won the ARIA Award for Best Female Artist at the 1992 awards. Her next album, ''Bitch Epic'', reached the top 20 in November 1993. Conway organised and performed on the Broad Festivals from 2005 to 2008 – show-casing contemporary Australian female artists. The ARIA Charts are the main Australian music sales charts, issued weekly by the Australian Recording Industry Association. The charts are a record of the highest selling songs and albums in various genres in Australia. ARIA became the official Australian music chart in June 1988, succeeding the Kent Music Report, which had been Australia's national music sales charts since 1974. Shane O'Mara (musician)
Shane O'Mara is an Australian musician and record producer. He worked with Stephen Cummings as a member of Stephen Cummings' Lovetown, Good Humour and the Stephen Cummings Band and co-produced the albums '' A New Kind of Blue'' (1989), ''Good Humour'' (1991) and ''Unguided Tour'' (1992). He played with Chris Wilson in the Chris Wilson Band which released an EP, ''The Big One'', in May and a studio album, ''Landlocked'', in June 1992, and he backed Wilson in ''Live at the Continental'' (October 1994). He formed Rebecca's Empire with then partner Rebecca Barnard (also part of Cumming's backing bands). They released two albums, ''Way of All Things'' (1996) and ''Welcome'' (1999) (both produced by O'Mara) before breaking up in 2000. ''Lily'' is the second solo studio album by Australian singer-songwriter Wendy Matthews released by rooArt in Australia on 28 September 1992 (see 1992 in music). Matthews travelled to Canada with her mother for the album to discover their heritage, which influences the album. Matthews states the album "overall, has vulnerability . . . t isreally heart on your sleeve stuff". The album won Matthews the ARIA Award for Best Female Artist at the ARIA Music Awards of 1993. Double J (formerly Dig Music) is an Australian digital radio station owned by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation. ''String of Pearls'' is the debut studio album by the Australian rock singer-songwriter and guitarist Deborah Conway. The album was released in October 1991 and peaked at number 20 on the Australian ARIA Charts. At the ARIA Music Awards of 1992, the album was nominated for four awards; Breakthrough Artist – Album, Album of the Year, Best Cover Art, and Best Female Artist. It won Best Female Artist. In June 2015, Conway celebrated the 25th anniversary of the album by performing the entire album in Melbourne. Critical reception Jonathan Lewis from AllMusic said "''String of Pearls'' ranges from the melodic pop of the most successful single "It's Only the Beginning" to the rock of "Under My Skin". Much of the rest of the album is acoustic pop and gentle ballads, with the superb "Release Me" being the best example. Conway's voice is what holds the album together.
