Regulatory Focus Theory
Regulatory focus theory (RFT) is a theory of goal pursuitCesario, J: "Regulatory fit and persuasion: Basic principles and remaining questions", Social and Personality Psychology Compass 2(1) formulated by Columbia University psychology professor and researcher E. Tory Higgins regarding people's motivationsand perceptions in judgment and decision making processes. RFT examines the relationship between the motivation of a person and the way in which they go about achieving their goal. RFT posits two separate and independent self-regulatory orientations: prevention and promotion (Higgins, 1997). This psychological theory, like many others, is applied in communication, specifically in the subfields of nonverbal communication and persuasion. Theory
A theory is a rational type of abstract thinking about a phenomenon, or the results of such thinking. The process of contemplative and rational thinking is often associated with such processes as observational study or research. Theories may be scientific, belong to a non-scientific discipline, or no discipline at all. Depending on the context, a theory's assertions might, for example, include generalized explanations of how nature works. The word has its roots in ancient Greek, but in modern use it has taken on several related meanings. Goal Pursuit
Goal pursuit is the process of attempting to achieve a desired future outcome. This generally follows goal setting, the process of forming these desires. Definition Gollwitzer and Brandstatter (1997) define four phases of goal pursuit as * predecisional ("setting preferences between concurring wishes and desires"), * preactional ("promoting the initiation of goal-directed actions"), * actional ("bringing goal-directed actions to a successful ending"), and * postactional ("evaluating what has been achieved as compared to what was desired"). Research is " creative and systematic work undertaken to increase the stock of knowledge". It involves the collection, organization and analysis of evidence to increase understanding of a topic, characterized by a particular attentiveness to controlling sources of bias and error.
