A Regius Professor is a university Professor (highest academic rank), professor who has, or originally had, Monarchy of the United Kingdom, royal patronage or appointment. They are a unique feature of academia in the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland, Ireland. The Regius Professor of Medicine (Aberdeen), first Regius Professorship was in the field of medicine, and founded by the Scottish King James IV of Scotland, James IV at the University of Aberdeen in 1497. George Smith (surgeon)
George Smith (1919–1994) was a 20th century Scottish surgeon who emigrated to the United States of America. Life He was born on 4 June 1919 in Carnoustie the son of John Shand Smith and his wife Lilimina Myles Mathers. He was educated at the Grove Academy. He then studied Medicine at St. Andrews University graduating MB ChB in 1942, and starting as an intern at Dundee Royal Infirmary. In the Second World War he served as surgeon Lieutenant with the Royal Navy. In 1945 he was created a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE). In 1959 he became Chairman of the St Andrews Medical School and in 1960 became Professor of Surgery at the University of Aberdeen. In 1967 he was elected a member of the Harveian Society of Edinburgh.< From 1974 to 1978 he also was Director of the Institute of Environmental and Offshore Medicine (linked to the oil industry). |

Sir John Marnoch
Sir John Marnoch (23 May 1867 – 2 February 1936) was a Scottish surgeon and British Army officer. He was Surgeon to the Royal Household in Scotland, Regius Professor of Surgery at the University of Aberdeen (1909 to 1932), and President of the Aberdeen Medico-Chirurgical Society (1909 to 1910). Alexander Ogston
Sir Alexander Ogston MD CM LLD (19 April 1844 – 1 February 1929) was a British surgeon, famous for his discovery of '' Staphylococcus''. Life Ogston was the eldest son of Amelia Cadenhead and her husband Prof. Francis Ogston (1803–1887), Professor of Medical Jurisprudence at the University of Aberdeen. He had a brother who was also a professor. University of Aberdeen Ogston began his medical training at Marischal College in 1862 and graduated as Bachelor of Medicine and Master of Surgery at the recently united University of Aberdeen in 1865 with honours in medicine and surgery at the age of 21. He obtained his MD a year later in 1866. He was appointed as a full surgeon to the Aberdeen Royal Infirmary in 1874. He was Assistant Professor of Medical Jurisprudence and Materia Medica, Lecturer in Ophthalmology and Anaesthetist before being appointed as Regius Professor of Surgery in 1882. William Pirie (born 2 April 1949) is a former Scottish footballer who played as a forward. Career Pirie commenced his senior Scottish football career with Huntly FC of the Highland Football League before transferring to his home town Scottish First Division League Club, Aberdeen FC. However, Pirie is best known for his time with Dundee from 1976 to 1980, where he made 112 league appearances (138 total), scoring 93 goals in the process (106 total), with 44 goals in his first season with the club remains a club record and secured for him the 1977 Player of the Year award.
