Region Gotland
Region Gotland, officially Gotlands kommun ( en, Gotland Municipality), is a municipality that covers the entire island of Gotland in Sweden. The city of Visby is the municipality's seat. Gotland Municipality is the 39th most populous municipality in Sweden. History On 31 December 1951 there were 93 local government units on the island of Gotland, among them one city (Visby), one market town (Slite), one county council and a lot of rural municipalities, many of them with fewer than 100 inhabitants. Twenty years later the situation was totally different. The first of the two nationwide local government reforms in Sweden during the 20th century was implemented on 1 January 1952. From that date on, the rural municipalities on the island were regrouped into twelve new enlarged municipalities, which together with Visby, Slite and the Gotland County Council formed the new administrative pattern. Gutnish Language
Gutnish ( ), or rarely Gutnic ( sv, gutniska or ), refers to the original language spoken on parts of the islands of Gotland and Fårö. The different dialects of Gutnish, while stemming from the Old Gutnish ( sv, Forngutniska) variety of Old Norse, are sometimes considered part of modern Swedish. Gutnish exists in two variants, Mainland Gutnish (''Storlandsgutamål'' or ''Storlandsmål''), mostly spoken in the southern and southeastern portion of Gotland, where the dialect of Lau, Gotland, Lau became the standard form on the Main Island (''Lau Gutnish'' → ''Laumål''), and Fårömål dialect, Fårö Gutnish (Gutnish: ''Faroymal''; sv, Fårömål), spoken on the island of Fårö. Lärbro
Lärbro () is a locality on the Swedish island of Gotland, with 963 inhabitants in 2014. Lärbro is also the name of the larger populated area, ''socken'' (not to be confused with parish). It comprises the same area as the administrative Lärbro District, established on 1January 2016. Geography Lärbro is the name of the locality surrounding the medieval Lärbro Church, sometimes referred to as ''Lärbro kyrkby''. It is also the name of the ''socken'' as well as the district. Lärbro is located in the northern part of Gotland, approximately north of Slite. , Lärbro Church belongs to Forsa parish in Norra Gotlands pastorat, along with the churches in Hellvi, Hangvar, Hall and Hallshuk. Fårösund
Fårösund is a locality situated on the Swedish island of Gotland with 800 inhabitants in 2014. The village can be reached by car from Visby. The island of Fårö can be reached by ferry from Fårösund. Fårösund is the northernmost town in the municipality of Gotland in Gotland County, about north of Visby. Fårösund is situated on the seafront overlooking the island of Fårö and is visited by tourists during the summer, but it is usually a quiet community in the autumn, winter and spring. Until the mid-1900s it was a small quiet resort as well as a ferry terminal for ferries to Fårö. As of February 2017 the Swedish Government is attempting to buy back the former naval port and related facilities, in the face of opposition from private interests including a Russian oligarch, as part of the emergency remilitarization of Gotland in the second half of the 2010s. Klintehamn
Klintehamn () is a locality in Klinte on the Swedish island of Gotland with 1,350 inhabitants in 2010. Transportation Klintehamn is a shipping port on the west coast of Gotland where timber and agricultural products are shipped to mainland Sweden. The harbor also has a marina for small boats. During summer, ferries depart daily from the harbor to Stora Karlsö island. In 1897, a railway was built from Klintehamn to Romakloster for transporting sugar beets to the sugar refinery in Roma. Slite
Slite is a locality situated in Gotland Municipality, Gotland County, on the island of Gotland, Sweden with 1,500 inhabitants in 2014. Geography Slite is situated on the northern east coast of Gotland. The town is divided by the Sjuströmmar inlet, connecting Bogevik bay with the Baltic Sea. The north, and main part, of the town is situated in Othem socken and the part south of Sjuströmmar is in Boge socken. Outside Slite is a small archipelago called Slite skärgård. The largest island is Asunden with its protected stack area. Close to the south tip of Asunden is the smaller Grunnet island. The island closest to Sjuströmmar is Enholmen where Karlsvärd Fortress is situated. High on a cliff in the north part of Slite is the modern Slite Church built in 1959–60.
