Reg Kent
Reg Kent (born Reginald Tashuck, October 24, 1944) is a Canadian retired professional ice hockey player who spent his career with the Johnstown Jets of the Eastern Hockey League and North American Hockey League. Other than brief stints with the Memphis Wings of the Central Professional Hockey League and the Seattle Totems of the Western Hockey League (totaling eight games), he spent his entire career with the Jets. Kent was born in Willingdon, Alberta. After four games with Memphis in the 1965-66 season to start his career, he moved in the same season to Johnstown, and finished with 27 goals and 43 assists to be the runner-up for Rookie of the Year honors. His best seasons were between 1968 and 1970. In the 1968 season, he had 38 goals and a league record 106 assists for 144 points in only 63 games, finishing in second place to Don Davidson in league scoring; he was also named to the league's First All-Star Team. Johnstown Jets
The Johnstown Jets were a professional ice hockey team from Johnstown, Pennsylvania. The Jets were founded in the Eastern Amateur Hockey League for the 1950–51 season, playing at the newly constructed Cambria County War Memorial Arena. The Jets won consecutive EHL championships in 1951–52 and 1952–53. When the EAHL suspended operations in 1953, the Jets transferred to the International Hockey League, where they played two seasons. Johnstown were Turner Cup finalists in 1953–54, losing four games to two, to the Cincinnati Mohawks. In 1955, the Jets joined the Eastern Hockey League (a league founded from the EAHL), and won three consecutive EHL championships in 1959–60, 1960–61 and 1961–62. Western Hockey League
The Western Hockey League (WHL) is a major junior ice hockey league based in Western Canada and the Northwestern United States. The WHL is one of three leagues that constitutes the Canadian Hockey League (CHL) as the highest level of junior hockey in Canada. Teams play for the Ed Chynoweth Cup, with the winner moving on to play for the Memorial Cup, Canada's national junior championship. WHL teams have won the Memorial Cup 19 times since the league became eligible to compete for the trophy. Under several names prior to 1958, the franchise was a member of the Pacific Coast Hockey League (renamed the Western Hockey League (1952–1974), Western Hockey League in 1952) between 1944 and 1974. Dick Roberge
Dick Roberge (born April 7, 1934) is a Canadian retired professional ice hockey forward and coach. He holds the record for most minor-league goals scored with 752. He is thought to be the inspiration behind Paul Newman's character, Reggie Dunlop, in the movie Slap Shot and appears in the film in an uncredited role as a referee. Playing career Roberge spent the majority of his career with the Johnstown Jets, joining the team at the start of the 1954-55 IHL season. He stayed with the Jets until the completion of the 1955-56 season where he would lead the league in goals scored (64) and points (118) before spending a season with the New Westminster Royals of the Western Hockey League. After playing three games with the Royals, Roberge returned to the Jets for the 1957-58 season. Memphis Wings
The Memphis Wings were a professional ice hockey team in Memphis, Tennessee. They played from 1964–67 in the Central Professional Hockey League. As their name suggested, they were a farm team of the NHL's Detroit Red Wings. The Red Wings' farm team was originally (in 1963–64) in Indianapolis. An arena explosion in November moved the team to become the Cincinnati Wings. The following season the team moved into Memphis. The Wings missed the playoffs in their first two years. In 1966–67 they made it into the semi-final, which they lost in seven games to the Omaha Knights. Attendance in the first year was over 130,000, or over 3,700 a game. In 1966–67 the attendance was about 71,000, or just over 2,000 a game. In 1967 the team moved to become the Fort Worth Wings. The team was replaced by the Memphis South Stars.
