Reform Party (Singapore)
The Reform Party (abbreviation: RP) is a political party in Singapore. The Reform Party is a liberal- democratic party. According to the party's constitution, it seeks to promote "political, social and economic reform; the restoration of full human rights; a fairer and just distribution of wealth with the elimination of poverty; an independently appointed judiciary and a fully elected and sovereign parliament". Its stated philosophy is "That every member of the society is born with fundamental rights which cannot be abrogated... and that it is the paramount duty of the society to promote the human dignity of its every single member." It was founded by opposition veteran and lawyer J. B. Jeyaretnam, notable as the former Secretary-General of the Workers' Party of Singapore and the first opposition candidate in post-independence Singapore, on 3 July 2008. Kenneth Jeyaretnam
Kenneth Andrew Jeyaretnam (born 1959) is a Singaporean politician and hedge fund manager who has been serving as the secretary-general of the opposition Reform Party since 2009. He is the elder son of J. B. Jeyaretnam, a prominent opposition politician in Singapore who founded the Reform Party in 2008. A Cambridge graduate with a double first class honours degree in economics, Jeyaretnam started his career in the financial sector and has worked at Wardley, Continental Bank, Banque Indosuez and Nomura International before becoming a hedge fund manager. He took up a more active role in politics after his father's death in 2008 and started leading the Reform Party. The Ang Mo Kio Group Representation Constituency is a five-member Group Representation Constituency (GRC) in the north eastern region of Singapore. The constituency encompasses the majority of Ang Mo Kio (Teck Ghee, Cheng San-Seletar, portions of Yio Chu Kang), Seletar Hills, the northern half of Serangoon North, a portion of northern Hougang and a portion of Fernvale. The Singapore People's Party (abbreviation: SPP) is a political party in Singapore. History SPP was founded on 21 November 1994 by Sin Kek Tong, who led a pro-Chiam See Tong faction out of the Singapore Democratic Party (SDP). Over two years, Sin stood as the pro-tem leader until Chiam joined the party and assumed leadership in December 1996, at the time the Parliament was dissolved ahead of the 1997 general election. Chiam See Tong
Chiam See Tong (; born 12 March 1935) is a Singaporean retired politician and lawyer who served as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Potong Pasir SMC between 1984 and 2011. He was one of the two opposition MPs in Parliament. Lawyer by profession, Chiam contested in the 1976 general election and 1979 by-elections as an independent candidate in Cairnhill SMC and Potong Pasir SMC but lost both. He founded the Singapore Democratic Party (SDP) in 1980 and became its secretary-general, and contested in the 1980 general election but was defeated again.
