Referential Transparency
In computer science, referential transparency and referential opacity are properties of parts of computer programs. An expression is called ''referentially transparent'' if it can be replaced with its corresponding value (and vice-versa) without changing the program's behavior. This requires that the expression be pure – its value must be the same for the same inputs and its evaluation must have no side effects. An expression that is not referentially transparent is called referentially opaque. In mathematics, all function applications are referentially transparent, by the definition of what constitutes a mathematical function. However, this is not always the case in programming, where the terms ''procedure'' and ''method'' are used to avoid misleading connotations. A defining characteristic of functional programming is that it only allows referentially transparent functions. ''Fundamental Concepts in Programming Languages'' were an influential set of lecture notes written by Christopher Strachey for the International Summer School in Computer Programming at Copenhagen in August, 1967. It introduced much programming language terminology still in use today, including " R-value" and " L-value", "ad hoc polymorphism", "parametric polymorphism", and "referential transparency". Christopher S. Strachey (; 16 November 1916 – 18 May 1975) was a British computer scientist. He was one of the founders of denotational semantics, and a pioneer in programming language design and computer time-sharing.F. J. Variable (computer Science)
In computer programming, a variable is an abstract storage location paired with an associated symbolic name, which contains some known or unknown quantity of information referred to as a ''value''; or in simpler terms, a variable is a named container for a particular set of bits or type of data (like integer, float, string etc...). A variable can eventually be associated with or identified by a memory address. The variable name is the usual way to reference the stored value, in addition to referring to the variable itself, depending on the context. This separation of name and content allows the name to be used independently of the exact information it represents. The identifier in computer source code can be bound to a value during run time, and the value of the variable may thus change during the course of program execution. Willard Van Orman Quine
Willard Van Orman Quine (; known to his friends as "Van"; June 25, 1908 – December 25, 2000) was an American philosopher and logician in the analytic tradition, recognized as "one of the most influential philosophers of the twentieth century". From 1930 until his death 70 years later, Quine was continually affiliated with Harvard University in one way or another, first as a student, then as a professor.
