Reeves Thoroughbred Racing
Reeves Thoroughbred Racing is a horse racing partnership headquartered in Suwanee, Georgia, formed in 2009 by Dean and Patti Reeves. The stable and ownership partners are the owners of 2013 Breeders' Cup Classic winner Mucho Macho Man. In September 2011, Dean Reeves hired Jonathan "Finn" Green to be the racing manager for the operation. Green worked closely with Kathy Ritvo in mapping the career of Mucho Macho Man. Ritvo has been the horse trainer for the race horses of the partnership since 2010. Mucho Macho Man was awarded the 2013 Secretariat Vox Populi Award, recognizing the struggles the horse had overcome in reaching success, as well as the accomplishments of his connections. He was also named Florida-bred Horse of the Year for 2013, noting that he was only the third Florida-bred horse to win the Classic, after Unbridled and Skip Away. Suwanee is a city in Gwinnett County and a northeastern suburb of Atlanta in the U.S. state of Georgia. Breeders' Cup Classic
The Breeders' Cup Classic is a Grade I Weight for Age thoroughbred horse race for 3-year-olds and older run at a distance of on dirt. It is held annually at a different racetrack as part of the Breeders' Cup World Championships in late October or early November. All of the races to date have been held in the United States except for the 1996 edition held at Woodbine Racetrack in Toronto, Canada. The Classic is considered by many to be the premier thoroughbred horse race of the year in the U.S., although the Kentucky Derby is more widely known among casual racing fans. Mucho Macho Man
Mucho Macho Man ( foaled June 15, 2008) is an American Thoroughbred racehorse who won the 2013 Breeders' Cup Classic. He was foaled in Florida and named after the Village People song " Macho Man". His breeders were Carole and John Rio of Florida, who owned his dam. His foalhood nickname was " Lazarus" because he appeared lifeless at birth, but spontaneously revived. He grew to be a very large horse, standing over high. Throughout most of his racing career, Mucho Macho Man was primarily owned by Dean and Patti Reeves of Reeves Thoroughbred Racing of Suwanee, Georgia. Katherine Ritvo
Katherine "Kathy" Ritvo (born February 13, 1969) is a race horse trainer who won the Breeders' Cup Classic in 2013 with Mucho Macho Man after having finished a close second in the same race in 2012. She is the first woman to have trained a winner of that race. She also was only the fifth woman trainer to win any Breeders' Cup race, and was the 14th woman trainer to saddle a starter in the Kentucky Derby in the 137 years that race had been run by 2011. Born Kathy Petro, she grew up in a horse racing family from Massachusetts and married a fellow horseman, Tim Ritvo, in 1990. Secretariat Vox Populi Award
The Secretariat Vox Populi Award, also known as the "Voice of the People" award, was established in 2010 by Penny Chenery, who was the owner of Secretariat (horse), Secretariat. The annual award "recognizes the horse whose popularity and racing excellence best resounded with the American public and gained recognition for Thoroughbred racing." Recipients of the award to date: , the award was chosen by a combined vote of the general public, conducted online; plus a vote of the Vox Populi committee, and a vote by Chenery. After Chenery's death in 2017, the voting procedure changed; , six nominees are chosen by a committee of "several distinguished personalities from within and outside the racing industry who all share a keen interest and affection for the sport". Unbridled (March 5, 1987 – October 18, 2001) was a champion American Thoroughbred racehorse who won the 1990 Kentucky Derby and Breeders' Cup Classic. Skip Away (April 4, 1993 – May 14, 2010), was a champion American Thoroughbred racehorse who was the 1998 Horse of the Year, 1996 Champion Three-Year-Old, and 1997 and 1998 Champion Handicap Horse. He won 10 Grade One races for $9,616,360 in prize money. Breeding Bred by Anna Marie Barnhart, Skip Away was foaled and reared at Hilmer Schmidt's Indian Hill Farm in Florida.
