Redwood 70
The Redwood 70 National Music Convention, commonly referred to as Redwood 70, was a music festival held on Auckland Anniversary Weekend in Swanson, West Auckland, New Zealand in 1970. Held six months after the Woodstock festival in the United States, Redwood 70 was the first modern multi-day pop music festival held in New Zealand. Headlined by Robin Gibb of the BeeGees with a line-up of predominantly New Zealand musicians, Gibb and his backing orchestra were pelted by objects from the crowd. While the concert did not turn a profit, it popularised the modern multi-day music festival in New Zealand. Festival The event was organised by local music promoter Phil Warren. Swanson, New Zealand
Swanson is an outlying suburb of West Auckland, New Zealand and is located west of Henderson, surrounded by the Waitākere Ranges. Developing as a service centre for the kauri logging and gumdigging trades in the 1880s along the trainline, the town developed as a rural centre and an early tourist destination for Aucklanders, who visited the Redwood Park on the banks of the Swanson Stream. In the 1940s, the park became a training centre for soldiers in World War II, and in 1970 hosted Redwood 70, the first modern music festival in New Zealand. Geography The Swanson area is primarily a valley north-east of the Waitākere Ranges, and a major catchment area for the Swanson Stream. Prior to human settlement, the Swanson area formed a part of the warm lowlands ecosystem common in inland West Auckland, dominated by kauri, rimu, rātā, kahikatea and rewarewa. The Chicks (duo)
The Chicks were a New Zealand singing sibling duo, active in the 1960s. Sisters Judy and Sue Donaldson scored several hits in their native country, including "Miss You Baby", which sounded similar to a song released by Lynne Randell entitled "Ciao Baby". After they split up, Sue launched a successful solo career as Suzanne Lynch, or simply, Suzanne. The Chicks were one of the local New Zealand acts who performed at Redwood 70, the first major modern music festival held in New Zealand in 1970. On 25 June 2020, the American band formerly known as "the Dixie Chicks" changed their name to The Chicks, dropping the word "Dixie". The band received Judy and Sue's blessings to share the name. Shane Paul Arthur Hales (born 15 May 1946), known by the stage name Shane and for some of the early part of his career as Trevor Hales, is a New Zealand singer who had several top-10 hits in that country's singles chart in the 1960s and 1970s. Biography Shane grew up in Guildford, Surrey, England, attending Park Barn Secondary School, before moving to Australia and then New Zealand in the mid-1960s. Shane started his career in 1966 as a member of Australian band The Pleazers, who spent much of their career in Auckland. Shane was briefly a member of Auckland band The Jamestown Union in 1967 before forming his own band, Shane. This band recorded a single, "The Town of Tuxley Toymaker" in 1968. The Rumour (New Zealand Band)
The Rumour was a New Zealand pop/rock music band in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Formed in 1966 and featuring twin brothers Shade and Gerard Smith, Jacques Koolen and Ross Hindman they went on to achieve success in the NZ pop scene with chart-topping hits "L'amour Est L'enfant de la Liberte", No 1 on the New Zealand charts for four weeks and "Holy Morning". The band was at various times a duo, a trio, quartet and quintet. Larry Morris (singer)
Larry's Rebels were a garage rock band, formed in Ponsonby, New Zealand, in 1964. The band had a relatively stable lineup, and had several nationally charting singles in New Zealand and Australia. Their musical genres ranged from blues rock to psychedelic pop, with lead vocalist Larry Morris having a versatile vocal range. The band later merged British Invasion and American musical influences into their repertoire. Hamilton County Bluegrass Band
The Hamilton County Bluegrass Band is a long-running New Zealand bluegrass band. They have been performing since the 1960s. History The Hamilton County Bluegrass Band was founded in Hamilton by Alan Rhodes and Paul Trenwith. Their main influence was the music of Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs from the Blue Grass Boys. Dave Calder, who was studying at the University of Auckland, liked the sound and became their mandolin player. The called themselves Muleskinners and started performing in 1966. Classical violinist Colleen Bain met the group in 1967 and joined the band as its fiddle player. Leonard Cohen and Sandy McMillin, joined to complete the lineup. The New Zealand Broadcasting Corporation (NZBC) was a publicly owned company of the New Zealand Government founded in 1962. The Broadcasting Act 1976 then reformed NZBC as the Broadcasting Corporation of New Zealand (BCNZ).
