Redonia
''Redonia'' is a genus of lichenized fungi in the family Caliciaceae. It contains the single species ''Redonia chilena'', a squamulose lichen. The type specimen was collected in Tarapacá, Chile, where it was found growing on calcareous soil. The genus was circumscribed in 1973 by Carroll William Dodge. The genus name honours Jorge Redón Figueroa, a Chilean lichenologist who collected the type. In his original circumscription of the genus, Dodge included the species ''Redonia cladocarpiza'' (transferred from ''Buellia ''Buellia'' is a genus of mostly lichen-forming fungi in the family Caliciaceae. Caliciales is an order of mostly lichenized fungi in the class Lecanoromycetes. It consists of two families: Caliciaceae and Physciaceae, which together contain 54 genera and more than 1200 species. The order was circumscribed by American botanist Charles Edwin Bessey in 1907. Caliciaceae
The Caliciaceae are a family of mostly lichen-forming fungi belonging to the class Lecanoromycetes in the division Ascomycota. Although the family has had its classification changed several times throughout its taxonomic history, the use of modern molecular phylogenetic methods have helped to establish its current placement in the order Caliciales. Caliciaceae contains 36 genera and about 600 species. The largest genus is ''Buellia'', with around 300 species; there are more than a dozen genera that contain only a single species. Most Caliciaceae grow on bark, dead wood, or rocks. Some members of this family, particularly those of the type genus, ''Calicium'', are characterized by the presence of thin-walled and short-lasting asci (spore-bearing cells) and a mazaedium, which is an accumulation of loose, maturing spores covering the surface of the fruiting body. Circumscription (taxonomy)
In biological taxonomy, circumscription is the content of a taxon, that is, the delimitation of which subordinate taxa are parts of that taxon. If we determine that species X, Y, and Z belong in Genus A, and species T, U, V, and W belong in Genus B, those are our circumscriptions of those two genera. Another systematist might determine that T, U, V, W, X, Y, and Z all belong in genus A. Agreement on circumscriptions is not governed by the Codes of Zoological or Botanical Nomenclature, and must be reached by scientific consensus. A goal of biological taxonomy is to achieve a stable circumscription for every taxon. This goal conflicts, at times, with the goal of achieving a natural classification that reflects the evolutionary history of divergence of groups of organisms. Carroll William Dodge
Carroll William Dodge (January 20, 1895 – July 21, 1988) was an American mycologist and lichenologist. His major fields of study included human and mammalian parasitic fungi, lichen-associated fungi, and fungi forming subterranean sporophores. (On p. 160 of Rudolf's article there is a misspelling: "Bertha Sanford Weiner" should be "Bertha Sanford Wiener".) Biography Carroll William Dodge was born in Danby, Vermont. He started his early education from Burr and Burton Seminaries in Manchester, Vermont. He went to Middlebury College at Vermont to study classical language and there he received his Artium Baccalaureus in 1915 and completed his master's in 1916.
