Redcar Pier
Redcar Pier was a Victorian pleasure and landing pier constructed on The Esplanade in the seaside town of Redcar on the north east coast of Yorkshire, England. Planning, design, construction and opening The construction of Redcar Pier in Redcar was proposed in 1866 and on 2 August the Redcar Pier Company was formed followed by an Act of Parliament authorising construction. There was little interest in proceeding to construct the pier until the plans were drawn up for a pier at neighbouring Coatham. The Redcar Pier scheme was financed by the sale of shares and a donation from the Earl of Zetland. With a design by J.E. & A. Dowson of Westminster, Head Wrightson constructed the pier beginning work on 28 August 1871. The diameter cast iron piles were driven into the rock by heavy pile driving machinery. Redcar is a seaside town on the Yorkshire Coast in the Redcar and Cleveland unitary authority in the county of North Yorkshire, England. It is located east of Middlesbrough. Coatham Pier or Victoria Pier, Coatham, was a pleasure pier built on Newcomen Terrace in the Coatham area of Redcar on the north-east Yorkshire coast. Planning and design In 1870 a pier for Coatham was proposed. After much discussion the decision was made to place the pier on Newcomen Terrace at the end of Newcomen Street – renamed Station Road in 1935. Marquess of Zetland is a title in the Peerage of the United Kingdom. It was created on 22 August 1892 for the former Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, Lawrence Dundas, 3rd Earl of Zetland. Zetland Lifeboat
The ''Zetland'' is the oldest surviving lifeboat in the world. It is currently in a free museum in Redcar, England. The name ''Zetland'' comes from the local Lord of Manor, the Marquess of Zetland. The ''Zetland'' is on the National Register of Historic Ships, as part of the National Historic Fleet. The lifeboat was stationed at Redcar in 1802, built by Henry Greathead of South Shields. Not all rescue attempts were successful. On Christmas Day 1836, a crewman was washed from the ''Zetland'' and drowned during a vain attempt to save the crew of the Danish brig ''Caroline''.
