Red Knoll was a one room school house that was constructed in 1850 for grades 1-8. The school was replaced by Little Mountain Elementary School in 1910. A fire destroyed the building in 1914. The school house is still standing and is currently on private land. Prior to its formal founding, the area was the site of several American Revolutionary War battles: Williams' Plantation, Dec. 31, 1780; Mud Lick, March 2, 1781; and Bush River, May 1781. /sup>The town of Newberry was founded in 1789 as the county seat and was sometimes called Newberry Courthouse for that reason.
