Red Deer Curling Classic
The Prism Flow Red Deer Curling Classic is an annual bonspiel, or curling tournament, that takes place at the Red Deer Curling Club in Red Deer, Alberta. The tournament is held in a triple-knockout format. The men's tournament started in 1992 as a skins tournament. The women's tournament started in 1999 as a separate event held a few weeks earlier and merged with the men's event in 2007. The event was held as a World Curling Tour event until 2019 and has been held nearly every year since 2007. Curlers from Alberta have dominated the event on both sides since its inception. The event counts toward the Canadian Team Ranking System, which hands out points based on performances at CTRS events and deals with qualification to the Canadian Olympic Curling Trials. Red Deer is a city in Alberta, Canada, located midway on the Calgary–Edmonton Corridor. Red Deer serves central Alberta, and key industries include health care, retail trade, construction, oil and gas, hospitality, manufacturing and education. It is surrounded by Red Deer County and borders on Lacombe County. The city is located in aspen parkland, a region of rolling hills, alongside the Red Deer River. History The area was inhabited by First Nations including the Blackfoot, Plains Cree and Stoney before the arrival of European fur traders in the late eighteenth century. A First Nations trail ran from the Montana Territory across the Bow River near present-day Calgary and on to Fort Edmonton, later known as the Calgary and Edmonton Trail. Darren Moulding (born December 2, 1982) is a Canadian curler from Lacombe, Alberta and curls out of the Saville Sports Centre and the Lacombe Curling Club. He is a former Canadian Junior Silver Medallist, a Canadian Mixed Champion, and represented Alberta in the 2017, 2018, 2020 and Team Wild Card in the 2019 Brier Canadian men's championship. Career Junior Moulding skipped the Alberta team at both the 2000 and 2003 Canadian Junior Curling Championships. At the 2000 Juniors, he led his team of Thomas Usselman, Ryan Inaba and Matt Taylor to a 5-7 record, missing the playoffs. At the 2003 Juniors, he led his rink of Brock Virtue, Taylor and Nicolas Virtue to a silver medal finish. Mark Johnson (curler)
Mark Johnson (born September 6, 1958, in Walla Walla, Washington) is an American-Canadian curler from Edmonton, Alberta. He is a former World Senior Curling Champion. Career Johnson has curled competitively in both Canada and the United States. In the mid-2000s, he skipped one of the top teams in Alberta. In 2006, he lost to Kevin Martin in the provincial final. He was asked by Martin to play as the team's alternate at the 2006 Tim Hortons Brier, in which Johnson played two games. In 2009, Johnson skipped a Seattle-based team at the 2010 United States Olympic Curling Trials. The team placed 4–5. Ted Appelman
Ted Appelman (born August 27, 1980 ) is a Canadian curler from Edmonton, Alberta, and the brother of fellow curler Tom Appelman. Career Appelman has made most of his successes to date as a skip, during the 2008–09 season and the 2009–10 season. His team was invited to participate in the 2009 Canada Cup of Curling, where he finished with a 1–4 record. His successes during that season qualified the team for the 2009 Canadian Olympic Pre-Trials, where he lost in the C-qualifier semi-final to Bob Ursel. Coming from a very competitive province, Appelman has never made to the Brier, but he lost in the semi-final at the 2010 Boston Pizza Cup (Alberta's provincial championship) in an attempt to do so. Jamie King (born November 21, 1973 in Edmonton, Alberta) is a Canadian curler. King was the alternate for the Kevin Koe rink in 2010, where he won 2010 Tim Hortons Brier and 2010 Capital One World Men's Curling Championship. King played in just two games at the World Championships, against Denmark and Japan. For much of that season, King skipped his own Edmonton-based rink. Following the season, King joined the Warren Hassall rink as third, and then skipped the rink the following season. Terry Meek
Terry Meek (born November 3, 1962, in Regina, Saskatchewan) is a Canadian curler from Calgary, Alberta. He is a former world silver medalist and is the current coaching consultant of the Cheryl Bernard rink (and is also her common law partner). He also skips his own team on the World Curling Tour. Career Meek played in his first provincial championship in 1987. In 1993, he skipped his mixed team to a provincial championship, and lost the final of the 1993 Canadian Mixed Curling Championship.
