Red Arrow (Swiss Train)
The Red Arrow (German: ''Roter Pfeil'', French: ''Flèche rouge'', Italian: ''Freccia rossa'') were railcars built in the 1930s by the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB). They were intended for traffic on lines with a low volume of traffic, following the global economic crisis of 1928. With increasing demand, the railcars had to be replaced by light express trains. Capable of speeds up to 150km/h, the double ''Red Arrow'' Re 4/8 301 was presented at the 1939 Swiss National Exhibition to showcase Swiss workmanship. Railcar
A railcar (not to be confused with a railway car) is a self-propelled railway vehicle designed to transport passengers. The term "railcar" is usually used in reference to a train consisting of a single coach (carriage, car), with a driver's cab at one or both ends. Some railway companies, such as the Great Western, termed such vehicles "railmotors" (or "rail motors"). Self-propelled passenger vehicles also capable of hauling a train are, in technical rail usage, more usually called "rail motor coaches" or "motor cars" (not to be confused with the motor cars, otherwise known as automobiles, that operate on roads). The term is sometimes also used as an alternative name for the small types of multiple unit which consist of more than one coach. SBB Historic is a foundation aiming at preserving historical documents and artefacts from the history of Swiss railway transportation. It was founded by the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) in 2001 and it is based in Windisch. This is a list of heritage railways in Switzerland. For convenience, the list includes any pre-World War II railway in the large sense of the term (either adhesion railway, rack railway or funicular) currently operated with at least several original or historical carriages. Switzerland has a very dense rail network, both standard and narrow gauge. The overwhelming majority of railways, built between the mid-19th and early 20th century, are still in regular operation today and were electrified earlier than in the rest of Europe. The major exception is the Furka Steam Railway, the longest unelectrified line in the country.
