Recreation Gesta July 25
The Recreation Gesta July 25 (in Spanish: ''Recreación de la Gesta del 25 de julio'') it is a commemoration and historical re-enactment that takes place in the city of Santa Cruz de Tenerife (Canary Islands, Spain) in July. This is a historical representation of Battle of Santa Cruz de Tenerife of 1797. The current Recreation Gesta began held in 2008 and is organized by the city of Santa Cruz de Tenerife and the ''Asociación Histórico Cultural Gesta del 25 de julio de 1797''. The event also has the support of the Government of the Canary Islands, the municipalities of Santa Cruz de Tenerife and San Cristóbal de La Laguna, Cabildo de Tenerife and the Port Authority of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Public holidays celebrated in Spain include a mix of religious (Roman Catholic), national and regional observances. The Iglesia-Parroquia Matriz de Nuestra Señora de La Concepción (''Church of the Immaculate Conception'') is a Catholic church located in the city of Santa Cruz de Tenerife (Canary Islands, Spain). It is the only church in the Canary Islands that has five naves. This church was built upon the first chapel erected by the Spanish conquistadors after landing on the coast where they would later build the city. This church is the main temple of the city, which is why it is called "the ''Cathedral of Santa Cruz''". However, it not is a cathedral; the Cathedral of La Laguna is the cathedral of Tenerife. The Castle of St John the Baptist ( es, Castillo de San Juan Bautista), also called the Black Castle (), is a fort on the island of Tenerife in the Canary Islands of Spain. It was the second-most important fort in the defence of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, the island's capital. It is located in the heart of the capital near the Parque Marítimo César Manrique and behind the Auditorio de Tenerife. Its construction was started in 1641 and completed in 1644. Antonio Gutiérrez de Otero y Santayana (8 May 1729 – 15 May 1799) was a Spanish Lieutenant general best known for repelling Admiral Nelson's attack on Santa Cruz de Tenerife in 1797. Biography He was born in Aranda de Duero, in Burgos, Old Castile, Spain. His father was in the military, and Gutiérrez followed his father's footsteps by enlisting as a cadet in the Spanish army at the age of seven. He participated in Spanish military campaigns in Italy, the Falklands, Algiers, and in the 1779-1783 blockade of Gibraltar under General Martín Alvarez. Gutiérrez also served as Commander of the island of Menorca. He was named Commander-General of the Canary Islands in 1791, and assumed this position on 31 January 1791; his predecessor in the position had been the Marquis of Branciforte. Cabildo Insular de Tenerife (Island Council of Tenerife) is the governing body of the island of Tenerife (Canary Islands).
