Rebati Ramanananda Shrestha
Rebati Ramanananda Shrestha ( ne, रेबतिरमणानन्द श्रेष्ठ) (1932–2002) was a Nepalese freedom fighter, journalist and Nepal Bhasa author. He also wrote under the pen name R. R. N. Syasya (रे. रे. न. स्यस्य). His works range from poems and epics to essays and short stories. He has written books on history, language, culture and religion. Early life Shrestha (alternative names: Rebati Ramanananda Shrestha Vaidya and Revatiramanananda Sreshtha Vaidya) was born in Kathmandu to father Basudevananda and mother Chandra Maya Shrestha. He was educated at Durbar High School in Kathmandu. Political career Shrestha joined the underground movement against the Rana dynasty in 1948 while a student at Durbar High. Rebati (Odia: ରେବତୀ), is a short story by Fakir Mohan Senapati, published in 1898. It is considered first ever short story published in . Theme Rebati is the story of a young girl whose desire for education in the backdrop of a conservative Odia society in a backward village, which is hit by a Cholera epidemic. The story itself also opens a third dimension when it deals with a very well bonded relation between Rebati and a school teacher. By displaying a forbidden desire for learning, Rebati, the female protagonist of the story, seems to invite misfortune for herself and her community. Over time "Rebati" has become an icon and her story an allegory for female education and emancipation. However the story itself does not advocate for or against these ideas. Nepal Bhasa movement (Newar: नेपालभाषा आन्दोलन) refers to the struggle for linguistic rights by Newar speakers in Nepal in the face of opposition from the government and hostile neighbors. The campaign aims to increase the use of Nepal Bhasa in the home, education, government and business. Despite a high level of development, Newar culture and language are both under threat.
