Raúl Estévez
Raúl Enrique Estévez (born 21 January 1978 in Lomas de Zamora, Argentina) is a retired Argentine footballer. Estévez, nicknamed "El Pipa", has played for San Lorenzo, Boca Juniors, Colón de Santa Fe and Racing Club of Argentina; Botafogo of Brazil; and Universidad de Chile and Unión Española of Chile. Career Argentina and Brazil He started his career at Club Atlético San Lorenzo de Almagro in Argentina. In 1995, he was promoted to the first team. He made his first-team debut that same year. In 2001, San Lorenzo won the Torneo Clausura 2001 and the Copa Mercosur. In 2003, he signed with Boca Juniors. That year, the team won a national and an international tournament, Torneo Clausura 2003 and Copa Libertadores. In 2004, he signed with Botafogo in Brazil where he remained for the first half of the season. The CONMEBOL Libertadores, also known as the Copa Libertadores de América ( pt, Copa Libertadores da América), is an annual international club football competition organized by CONMEBOL since 1960. It is the highest level of competition in South American club football. The tournament is named after the ''Libertadores'' (Spanish and Portuguese for ''liberators''), the leaders of the Latin American wars of independence, so a literal translation of its former name into English is "''America's Liberators Cup''". The competition has had several formats over its lifetime. Initially, only the champions of the South American leagues participated. In 1966, the runners-up of the South American leagues began to join. In 1998, Mexican teams were invited to compete and contested regularly from 2000 until 2016. The Copa Mercosur (, pt, Copa Mercosul , "Mercosur Cup") was a football competition played from 1998 to 2001 by the traditional top clubs from Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay and Chile. The competition was created by CONMEBOL to generate TV money to the participating teams, but it went beyond and ended up, together with the Copa Merconorte, as natural replacement to the CONMEBOL Cup. These two, Copa Merconorte and Copa Mercosur, were replaced in 2002 by the Copa Sudamericana. Format Twenty teams played in the tournament. The 2009 Copa Sudamericana de Clubes (officially the 2009 Copa Nissan Sudamericana de Clubes for sponsorship reasons) is the 8th edition of the CONMEBOL's secondary international club tournament. Internacional were the defending champions, having won the trophy the previous season. Ecuadorian side LDU Quito won the 2009 tournament, becoming the first Ecuadorian winners of the trophy. From this edition onward, CONCACAF teams, which have participated in the tournament since 2005, will no longer be participating because of the format change in the CONCACAF Champions League, which conflicted with scheduling.
