Raizes do Samba is a series of compilation albums of notable Brazilian musicians, mostly of the bossa nova, samba and Tropicalismo genres. Bossa Nova
Bossa nova () is a style of samba developed in the late 1950s and early 1960s in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It is mainly characterized by a "different beat" that altered the harmonies with the introduction of unconventional chords and an innovative syncopation of traditional samba from a single rhythmic division. The "bossa nova beat" is characteristic of a samba style and not of an autonomous genre. According to the Brazilian journalist Ruy Castro, the bossa beat – which was created by the drummer Milton Banana – was "an extreme simplification of the beat of the samba school", as if all instruments had been removed and only the tamborim had been preserved. In line with this thesis, musicians such as Baden Powell, Roberto Menescal, and Ronaldo Bôscoli also claim that this beat is related to the tamborim of the samba school. Paulinho Da Viola
Paulinho da Viola (born Paulo César Batista de Faria on 12 November 1942) () is a Brazilian '' sambista'', singer-songwriter, guitar, cavaquinho and mandolin player, known for his sophisticated harmonies and soft, gentle singing voice. Biography Born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, to a family deeply rooted in the samba tradition, Paulinho met and befriended much of Rio's samba elite as a child. Moreira Da Silva
Antônio Moreira da Silva (1 April 1902, in Rio de Janeiro – 6 June 2000, in Rio de Janeiro) was a very reputed Brazilian singer and songwriter of Samba, also known by his nickname ''Kid Morengueira''. He was the older son of Bernardino de Sousa Paranhos, trombone player for the Rio de Janeiro Military Police (PMERJ), and Miss Pauladina de Assis Moreira. Born in Rio de Janeiro, in the ''Morro do Salgueiro'' district, he only began to study at nine years-old, but soon left school in favor of music (after the death of his father). During his career, at the same time when he seriously started performing, songwriting and singing, he worked as factory employee, cab driver and ambulance driver. Elza Soares
Elza da Conceição Soares ( née Gomes; 23 June 1930 – 20 January 2022), known professionally as Elza Soares (), was a Brazilian samba singer. In 1999, she was named Singer of the Millennium along with Tina Turner by BBC Radio. Elza was deemed dangerous by the Military dictatorship in Brazil (1964–1985), and in 1970 her house in the Jardim Botânico neighborhood, in Rio de Janeiro, was machine-gunned by regime agents. Inside were her partner Garrincha and their children. The living room, where the young children were, was destroyed by the blasts. She and Garrincha had to flee to Italy, where they were received by Chico Buarque de Hollanda also in exile. Jair Rodrigues
Jair Rodrigues de Oliveira (February 6, 1939 – May 8, 2014) was a Brazilian musician and singer. He is the father of Luciana Mello and Jair Oliveira, who also followed in his footsteps and became musicians. Biography Born in Igarapava, Rodrigues grew up in Nova Europa, a city in the interior of the state of São Paulo, where he lived until 1954. Thereafter he moved with his family to São Carlos, where he started his musical career, as the city had the best nightlife in the region. Roberto Ribeiro
Dermeval Miranda Maciel, best known as Roberto Ribeiro. (Campos dos Goytacazes, July 20, 1940 – January 8, 1996) was a Brazilian samba singer. Life Son of a gardener, he had already begun working at 9 years of age. By that time, he attended the samba school Amigos da Farra (Friends of Farra), from the city of Campos, and the Pintadinho Boi parties, a local tradition event. Player of professional football in his hometown, he played in Cruzeiro and Rio Branco, both of Campos. He was known by nickname "pneu" ("tire"). Later he was the Goitacaz's goalkeeper and in 1965 moved to Rio de Janeiro and tried to serve in Fluminense, but failed. However, in Rio de Janeiro, Roberto Ribeiro started to be involved by samba. Alfredo da Rocha Viana Filho, known as Pixinguinha (; April 23, 1897February 17, 1973) was a Brazilian composer, arranger, flautist and saxophonist born in Rio de Janeiro. Pixinguinha is considered one of the greatest Brazilian composers of popular music, particularly within the genre of music known as choro. Benito Di Paula
Uday Vellozo, with stage name of Benito di Paula (born 28 November 1941), is a Brazilian singer-songwriter, composer, pianist and writer. He is known for his characteristic samba that started when he was young and sang in hotels and nightclubs in Rio de Janeiro, where he did not play a specific genre. Di Paula was invited by a friend to play in Santos, where he led his career in the State of São Paulo. He settled down and raised a family in São Paulo, where he developed his career, becoming the great symbol of ''Samba Paulista''.
