Raymond Walsh
Raymond Joseph Walsh (1862 – 10 February 1930) was an Australian politician. He was born at Ellalong near Maitland, the son of Thomas Walsh and Ellen Brines. He received a primary education and was a compositor on the ''Maitland Mercury'' before moving to Tamworth around 1881. There he worked as a tailor, and around 1884 married Mary Elizabeth Buosell, with whom he had three children. In 1901 he was elected to the New South Wales Legislative Assembly as the member for Tamworth; he ran as an independent, but always supported Premier John See and was soon considered a Progressive. In 1903 he was declared bankrupt and thus was no longer eligible to sit in parliament; he contested the by-election as an endorsed Progressive but was defeated by the Liberal candidate. The Liberal Reform Party was an Australian political party, active in New South Wales state politics between 1901 and 1916. It drew much of its support from Protestant and Temperance groups. History The question of tariff policy which, had created and divided the Free Trade Party and Protectionist Party in New South Wales in the 1890s, became a federal issue at the time of federation. Deprived of their main ideological difference, the two parties were recreated as the Liberal Reform Party, aligned with the federal Free Trade Party, and the Progressive Party, aligned with the federal Protectionist Party. The Progressive Party's vote collapsed at the 1904 election and many of its members then joined the Liberal Reform Party. John Garland (Australian Politician)
John Garland (17 September 1862 – 23 February 1921) was a Scottish-born Australian politician. He was born at Fordyce, Banffshire to farmer Robert Garland and Isabella Whyte. He attended Fordyce Academy in Fordyce and graduated as a Master of Arts from the University of Aberdeen in 1882. In 1886, he received a Bachelor of Law degree from the University of Edinburgh, and in 1887 migrated to Australia, where he was called to the bar on 30 November 1888. On 21 December 1896 he married Isobel Chisholm, with whom he had a daughter. A founding member of the Council of the Bar of New South Wales, he was also a procurator of the Presbyterian Church and a lecturer on ecclesiastical law at the University of Sydney. In 1898 he was elected to the New South Wales Legislative Assembly as the Free Trade member for Woollahra. He was defeated in 1901, but won a by-election for Tamworth in 1903. William Sawers
William Bowie Stewart Campbell Sawers (1844 – 19 May 1916) was a Scottish-born Australian politician. Born in Stirlingshire in Scotland, where he was educated, he migrated to Australia in 1865, becoming a grazier with large holdings. In 1885 he was elected to the New South Wales Legislative Assembly as the member for Bourke, holding the seat until 1886; later, in 1898, he was elected to the seat of Tamworth. In 1901 he resigned from the Legislative Assembly in order to contest the first federal election as the Protectionist candidate for New England; he won narrowly. Progressive Party (1901)
The Progressive Party was an Australian political party, active in New South Wales state politics. The question of tariff policy which, had created and divided the Free Trade Party and Protectionist Party in New South Wales in the 1890s, became a federal issue at the time of federation. Deprived of their main ideological difference, the two parties were recreated as the Liberal Reform Party aligned with the federal Free Trade Party and the Progressive Party aligned with the federal Protectionist Party. Sir John See (14 October 184431 January 1907) was a member of the New South Wales Legislature from 26 November 1880 to 15 June 1901, and was then Premier of New South Wales from 1901 to 1904. See was a self-made man of strong character, an excellent business man and a sound politician.
