Raymond Gruppi
Raymond Gruppi (born in Villeneuve-sur-Lot, on 30 September 1937), is a French former rugby league player who played as centre and wing and later was a coach. Personal life He is the brother of the former rugby league player Jacques Gruppi, as well of the former rugby union player Pierre Gruppi. His sons are Enzo Gruppi and Thibaut Gruppi, who play for Villeneuve XIII RLLG. In the civil life, outside the field, he worked as a seedsman. He is also a horse trainer Biography He spent most of his playing career at Villeneuve-sur-Lot, playing the French Championship, which eventually ended as runner-up in 1965, and at the Lord Derby Cup a season later. With his club performances, he was called up several times for the French national team between 1959 and 1971, taking part in the 1960 and 1970 World Cups. Villeneuve-sur-Lot
Villeneuve-sur-Lot (; in the Languedocien dialect of Occitan language: ''Vilanuèva d'Òlt'' ) is a town and commune in the southwestern French department of Lot-et-Garonne. The commune was formerly named ''Villeneuve-d'Agen''. Villeneuve-sur-Lot is located 22 km northeast of the commune of Agen and straddles the river Lot. History Villeneuve was founded in 1254 by Alphonse, Count of Poitiers, brother of Louis IX, on the site of the town of Gajac, which had been deserted during the Albigensian Crusade. By the early 20th century, Villeneuve-sur-Lot was an important agricultural centre and had a large trade in plums (''prunes d'ente''); the preparation of preserved plums and the tinning of peas and beans were major industries. Jacques Merquey
Jacques Merquey (born 26 September 1929) also known by the nickname of "Jackiew", as a French rugby footballer of the 1950s. A dual-code rugby international, his position was , later in his career this changed to . While Merquey started in union, he played the vast majority of his career in rugby league. He played his club rugby league for Marseille, Sporting Olympique Avignon XIII and Lezignan, becoming the most capped International, with 37 games for France. Merquey is the only Frenchman to play in the first three successive World Cups, in 1954, 1957 and 1960. Merquey originally played rugby union, where he also represented France, in a total of four games against England, Wales, Ireland and Scotland in 1950. However he much preferred rugby league and quickly changed codes. In 1951 Merquey was part of the first ever French rugby league tour of Australia.
