Raymond Culver
Raymond Benjamin Culver (July 11, 1887 – June 7, 1938) was a Baptist educator in the United States and the fourth president of Shimer College. Culver was born in Algansee Township, Michigan on July 11, 1887. He received a bachelor of music from Linfield College in Oregon, in 1914, where he was president of the student body. Subsequently, obtained multiple degrees from Yale University: a B.A. in 1916, B.Div. from Yale Divinity School in 1920, M.A. in 1921, and a Ph.D. in 1924. After Yale, he served as professor of Bible and religious education at Linfield College. From 1936 to 1938, Culver served as the fourth president of Shimer College, then known as Frances Shimer Junior College and located in Mount Carroll, Illinois, USA. Linfield College
Linfield University is a private university with campuses in McMinnville, and Portland, Oregon. Linfield Wildcats athletics participates in the NCAA Division III Northwest Conference. This is a list of notable students and faculty of Shimer College, a Great Books college that was acquired in 2017 by North Central College. Founded in 1853, Shimer occupied a traditional college campus in Mount Carroll, Illinois, from 1853 to 1978, and an improvised campus in Waukegan from 1979 to 2006. It then occupied a dedicated space on the Illinois Institute of Technology campus in Chicago since 2006. Small throughout its existence, Shimer enrolled 141 students as of 2012. As of 2008, Shimer had 5,615 living alumni. On June 1, 2017, the college became the Shimer Great Books School of North Central College. The school was known for its Great Books curriculum, and also for its early entrance program, both of which have been in effect since 1950. Many on this list were early entrants. History Of Shimer College
Shimer College was founded in 1852, when the pioneer town of Mt. Carroll, Illinois, lacking a public school, incorporated the Mt. Carroll Seminary with no land, no teachers, and no money for this purpose. Founded as non-denominational, it was affiliated with Baptists from 1896 into the 1950s, and subsequently with The Episcopal Church between 1959 and 1973, after which it became non-denominational once again. Shimer has evolved over time from a coeducational seminary to a women's seminary, a women's academy, a women's junior college, a women's college, and finally a coeducational Great Books college. Throughout its existence, it has been involved a series of crises and profound changes.
