Ray Glastonbury
Raymond Glastonbury (born 11 December 1938) is a Welsh former rugby union and professional rugby league footballer who played in the 1950s and 1960s. He played club level rugby union (RU) for Cardiff RFC, as a wing, i.e. number 11 or 14, and representative level rugby league (RL) for Wales, and at club level for Workington Town, as a , i.e. number 2 or 5. Background Ray Glastonbury was born in Bedwellty district, Wales, and he was the younger brother of the rugby union wing who played in the 1950s and 1960s for Cardiff RFC (11-matches during the 1958/59 season), Glamorgan Wanderers RFC and Pontypridd RFC; Blandford Glastonbury (birth registered first ¼ in Pontypridd district, marriage to Patricia K. Bedwellty
Bedwellty is a small village in Caerphilly County Borough in south Wales. The village stands on a ridge of high ground between the Rhymney and Sirhowy valleys. The village comprises a parish church, public house and a few houses. The ancient parish of Bedwellty lay in Monmouthshire and covered a large area. Several industrial and mining towns grew up within the parish boundary, including Ebbw Vale, Rhymney, and Tredegar. These gradually gained administrative independence from Bedwellty between the 1870s and 1890s. A Bedwellty Local Government District was established for the rest of the parish in 1891, becoming an urban district in 1894. Bedwellty Urban District was abolished in 1974, being divided between the Rhymney Valley and Islwyn districts. A community called Bedwellty was then created for the part of the former urban district which lay within Islwyn. 1962–63 Northern Rugby Football League Season
The 1962–63 Northern Rugby Football League season was the 68th season of rugby league football. Season summary 1962–63 season saw the league split into two divisions with each team playing each other team home and away. The introduction of an even league meant the end of season championship play-off was done away with and the team finishing top of the table was declared champions. 1962-63 finished up with huge fixture backlogs similar to 1946-47 after "the Big Freeze" brought heavy snow and postponed most rugby league matches for two and half months. Swinton won their fifth Championship. Oldham and Bramley were demoted to the Second Division. The Challenge Cup winners were Wakefield Trinity who beat Wigan 25–10 in the final. The 2nd Division Champions were Hunslet who were promoted along with second placed Keighley. In sport, a cap is a player's appearance in a game at international level. The term dates from the practice in the United Kingdom of awarding a cap to every player in an international match of rugby football and association football. In the early days of football, the concept of each team wearing a set of matching shirts had not been universally adopted, so each side would distinguish itself from the other by wearing a specific sort of cap. An early illustration of the first international football match between Scotland and England in 1872 shows the Scottish players wearing cowls, and the English wearing a variety of school caps.
