This is a discography of American musician Ray Charles. Overview Ray Charles first appeared on a ''Billboard'' chart in 1949, when — as part of the Maxin Trio with G.D. McKee and Milton Garred — he charted his first single with "Confession Blues." It reached No. 2 on the R&B chart, then called the Most-Played Juke Box Race Records. In 1952, Charles signed with Atlantic Records and went on to top ''Billboard''s pop, country, R&B, jazz, and dance charts. In the early 1960s, after leaving Atlantic Records to sign with ABC–Paramount, he negotiated for ownership of his own master recordings. He also established his own labels. Tangerine came first, which later evolved into CrossOver Records. As a songwriter, Charles penned nearly 200 songs. He also operated his own publishing companies, Tangerine Music and Racer Music. Ray Charles
Ray Charles Robinson Sr. (September 23, 1930 – June 10, 2004) was an American singer, songwriter, and pianist. He is regarded as one of the most iconic and influential singers in history, and was often referred to by contemporaries as "The Genius". Among friends and fellow musicians he preferred being called "Brother Ray". Charles was blinded during childhood, possibly due to glaucoma. Charles pioneered the soul music genre during the 1950s by combining blues, jazz, rhythm and blues, and gospel styles into the music he recorded for Atlantic Records. He contributed to the integration of country music, rhythm and blues, and pop music during the 1960s with his crossover success on ABC Records, notably with his two ''Modern Sounds'' albums. While he was with ABC, Charles became one of the first black musicians to be granted artistic control by a mainstream record company. ''In Person'' is a live album recorded by Ray Charles on May 28, 1959 on a rainy night in Atlanta, Georgia at Morris Brown College's Herndon Stadium. All tracks from this album together with those from ''Ray Charles at Newport'' were also released on the 1987 Atlantic Records, Atlantic compilation CD, ''Live (Ray Charles album), Ray Charles Live''. The album was recorded by the concert sponsor, radio station WAOK. The station's lead disk jockey, Zenas "Daddy" Sears, recorded the album from the audience using a single microphone. The album is noted for its technical excellence in balancing band, singer, and audience, and also for its documentation of the jazzy rhythm and blues, R&B Ray Charles sound prior to his great crossover success. The album was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1999. ''The Genius of Ray Charles'' is a 1959 Ray Charles album, released in October by Atlantic Records, the seventh album since the debut ''Ray Charles'' in 1957. The album consists of swinging pop with big band arrangements. It comprises a first half of big band songs and a second half of string-backed ballads. ''The Genius of Ray Charles'' sold fewer than 500,000 copies and charted at number 17 on the ''Billboard'' 200. " Let the Good Times Roll" and " Don't Let the Sun Catch You Cryin'" were released as singles in 1959. ''What'd I Say'' is an album by American musician Ray Charles, released by Atlantic Records in late 1959. His sixth album since the debut ''Ray Charles'' in 1957, ''What'd I Say'' compiled a range of Charles' material, including his first top 10 hit, the title track "What'd I Say". The album became his first gold record., and is included in Robert Christgau's "Basic Record Library" of 1950s and 1960s recordings, published in '' Christgau's Record Guide: Rock Albums of the Seventies'' (1981). Though routinely classified as a standard album, at the time of its 1959 release, it was more of a compilation of previously uncollected Charles material. ''Ray Charles at Newport'' is a 1958 live album of Ray Charles' July 5, 1958 performance at the Newport Jazz Festival. The detailed liner notes on the album were written by Kenneth Lee Karpe. All tracks from this Newport album, along with all tracks from his 1959 Herndon Stadium performance in Atlanta, were also released on the Atlantic compilation LP '' Ray Charles Live''. Milt Jackson
Milton Jackson (January 1, 1923 – October 9, 1999), nicknamed "Bags", was an American jazz vibraphonist, usually thought of as a bebop player, although he performed in several jazz idioms. He is especially remembered for his cool swinging solos as a member of the Modern Jazz Quartet and his penchant for collaborating with hard bop and post-bop players. A very expressive player, Jackson differentiated himself from other vibraphonists in his attention to variations on harmonics and rhythm. He was particularly fond of the twelve-bar blues at slow tempos. On occasion, Jackson also sang and played piano. ''The Great Ray Charles'' is the second studio album by American musician Ray Charles, released in 1957 by Atlantic Records. An instrumental jazz album, it features cover art designed by Marvin Israel. Later CD re-issues of ''The Great Ray Charles'' often include six out of the eight songs from the 1961 album ''The Genius After Hours'', as bonus tracks. Release ''The Great Ray Charles'' was released by Atlantic Records in August 1957. Due to frequent airplay of two tracks off the album, " Doodlin" and "Sweet Sixteen Bars", Atlantic released those two tracks as an EP later that same year. Yvette Marie Stevens (born March 23, 1953), better known by her stage name Chaka Khan (), is an American singer. Her career has spanned more than five decades, beginning in the 1970s as the lead vocalist of the funk band Rufus.
