Ray Castoldi
Ray Castoldi has been the stadium organist at Madison Square Garden since 1989. During the summer, when the New York Rangers and New York Knicks are spending their offseasons, Castoldi was heard at the organ at New York Mets games at Citi Field until 2014 (and previously Shea Stadium). Because of this, he is the only person to play for the Mets, Rangers and Knicks in the same season. (Similarly Gladys Gooding had played organ for the Brooklyn Dodgers, the Knicks and Rangers in the same year; likewise Eddie Layton and Jack Shaindlin played for the New York Yankees, Knicks and Rangers in the same season.) Castoldi has played the organ at the 1994 NBA Finals, 1994 Stanley Cup Finals, 1994 NHL All-Star Game, 1998 NBA All-Star Game, and the 2014 Stanley Cup Finals all of which were played at Madison Square Garden. A stadium organist is a musician who plays an organ during live sporting events. Organs at sporting events During the early part of the 20th century, organs were often found in public locations such as movie theaters, eating establishments, and shopping malls. Before then, they had customarily only been found in churches. Music played at sporting events, if there was any, would occasionally be provided by military bands. The first organ used in a stadium in the United States was in Chicago Stadium, which opened in 1929. The organ music was used for what was called "psychological accompaniment" for events at the stadium, especially hockey matches. Other stadiums that featured hockey games began getting their own organs including Madison Square Garden in 1936, and the Boston Garden in 1939. 2013 MLB All-Star Game
The 2013 Major League Baseball All-Star Game was the 84th edition of the Major League Baseball All-Star Game. It was held on Tuesday, July 16, 2013 at Citi Field in Queens, New York City, the home of the New York Mets. This was the first time that the Mets have hosted an All-Star Game since 1964, the team's inaugural season at Shea Stadium, and the ninth time the All-Star Game was held in New York City. Slapshot (song)
"Slapshot" is a 1995 song written by Ray Castoldi, the music director and organist for Madison Square Garden. The song was written as a goal song for the New York Rangers and was debuted on January 20, 1995, in Madison Square Garden. The Ontario Hockey League's Kitchener Rangers also use the horn, along with the same or similar horn. The recording of the song that is used by the Rangers at their home games was created by local rock band Bad Apple. Composition and recording During the 1994–95 NHL lockout, the New York Rangers sought to create a goal song that was unique to the Rangers and would not receive radio airtime. This followed the victory of the New York Rangers in the 1994 Stanley Cup Playoffs, and Ray Castoldi, the music director and organist for Madison Square Garden, found inspiration to write a song that would become what he later described as a "signature song" for the Rangers, by whom he was commissioned.
