Ray Budd
Raymond Francis Budd (9 June 1910 – 14 August 1974) was a South African trade union leader. Born in the Mowbray area of Cape Town, Budd was educated at the Cape Technical College, before completing an apprenticeship at a railway workshop. In 1933, he joined the Amalgamated Engineering Union (AEU), soon becoming a shop steward, then the union's Cape Town district secretary. From 1946 to 1948, he served as president of the Cape Federation of Labour Unions, then in 1949, he began working full-time for the AEU as secretary of its South African Council. In 1949 and 1950, Budd served as vice-president of the South African Trades and Labour Council. In 1954, he was a leading figure on the Unity Committee, which opposed government plans to prohibit trade unions including both white and "coloured" workers. Mowbray, Cape Town
Mowbray is one of the Southern Suburbs of Cape Town, South Africa and lies on the slopes of Devil's Peak. Mowbray is at a junction of several major Cape Town highways and has an important multi-modal public transport interchange at Mowbray railway station. Its original name was Driekoppen ("Three heads" in Dutch). Geography Mowbray is bounded on the west by the M3 freeway, beyond which lies Devil's Peak, and on the north by the N2 freeway, beyond which lies the suburb of Observatory. Amalgamated Engineering Union Of South Africa
The Amalgamated Engineering Union of South Africa (AEU) was a trade union representing white manufacturing workers in South Africa. The British Amalgamated Society of Engineers established its first branch in South Africa in 1886, and in 1893 its South Africa branches became a distinct section of the union. It remained affiliated to its British parent as it became part of the Amalgamated Engineering Union, but while the British union began accepting all workers, regardless of perceived skill level, the South African section remained a craft union of higher-paid workers. In 1957, the union became independent. At the time, it was affiliated to the Trade Union Council of South Africa, but it objected when that federation began accepting unions of black workers, and left in 1965. A union representative, union steward, or shop steward is an employee of an organization or company who represents and defends the interests of their fellow employees as a labor union member and official. Cape Federation Of Labour Unions
The Cape Federation of Labour Unions (CFLU) was a trade union federation in South Africa. The federation was founded in 1913. It aimed to represent all workers in the Cape Province, although most of its membership consisted of unions representing white and "coloured" workers. It initially only attracted three affiliates, including the Amalgamated Society of Carpenters and Joiners. It was initially led by secretary Joe Dean, who was replaced by Bob Stuart in 1914. The federation grew significantly under Stuart's leadership, and it survived the start of the 1920s, when many other labour movement organisations collapsed. South African Trades And Labour Council
The South African Trades and Labour Council (SAT&LC) was a national trade union federation in South Africa. History The federation was founded in 1930, when the South African Trades Union Council merged with the Cape Federation of Labour Unions. The federation was broadly split between the craft unions and mining unions, which generally only admitted white workers and took conservative positions; and a growing number of industrial unions, which admitted white, Asian and "coloured" members, and often worked closely with unions representing black workers. In 1944, the federation adopted the Workers' Charter, which aimed to bring about a socialist government. In 1947, some unions of white workers resigned in opposition to the SAT&LC admitting black workers, and they formed the pro-apartheid Co-ordinating Council of South African Trade Unions. The Trade Union Council of South Africa (TUCSA) was a national trade union federation in South Africa. History The council was founded in October 1954 by 61 unions which split from the South African Trades and Labour Council. They decided that only registered unions would be permitted to affiliate. Because unions representing black workers were not permitted to register, this meant they were excluded from the council. A few retained links with TUCSA affiliates, and established the parallel Federation of Free African Trade Unions of South Africa. The federation was initially named the South African Trades Union Council.
