Ray Brown (Baltimore Colts)
Raymond Lloyd Brown (September 7, 1936 – December 25, 2017) was a professional American football defensive back in the National Football League (NFL). After playing college football for the Ole Miss Rebels, he was drafted by the Baltimore Colts in the fifth round (50th overall) of the 1958 NFL Draft. He played three seasons for the Baltimore Colts (1958–1960), and was a member of their back-to-back world championships in 1958 and 1959. In 1962, Brown graduated from the University of Mississippi School of Law, where he was associate editor of the ''Mississippi Law Journal''. He then clerked for a year for U.S. Supreme Court Justice Tom C. Clark. Brown died on December 25, 2017, in Gautier, Mississippi, at age 81. Defensive Back
In gridiron football, defensive backs (DBs), also called the secondary, are the players on the defensive side of the ball who play farthest back from the line of scrimmage. They are distinguished from the other two sets of defensive players, the defensive linemen who play directly on the line of scrimmage, and the linebackers, who play in the middle of the defense, between the defensive line and the defensive backs. Among the defensive backs, there are two main types, cornerbacks, which play nearer the line of scrimmage and the sideline, whose main role is to cover the opposing team's wide receivers, and the Safety (gridiron football position), safeties, who play further back near the center of the field, and who act as the last line of defense. 1958 NFL Draft
The 1958 National Football League draft had its first four rounds held on December 2, 1957, and its final twenty-six rounds on January 28, 1958. Both sessions were held at the Warwick Hotel in Philadelphia. This was the 12th and final year in which the first overall pick was a "lottery bonus". The Chicago Cardinals were automatically awarded the pick because it was the only team left that had not won the draft lottery yet. The Cardinals used the first pick to select quarterback King Hill. Law clerks have assisted the justices of the United States Supreme Court in various capacities since the first one was hired by Justice Horace Gray in 1882. Each justice is permitted to have between three and four law clerks per Court term. Most persons serving in this capacity are recent law school graduates (and typically graduated at the top of their class). Among their many functions, clerks do legal research that assists justices in deciding what cases to accept and what questions to ask during oral arguments, prepare memoranda, and draft orders and opinions. After retiring from the Court, a justice may continue to employ a law clerk, who may be assigned to provide additional assistance to an active justice or may assist the retired justice when sitting by designation with a lower court.
