Rawya Saud Al Busaidi
Rawya Saud Al Busaidi ( ar, راوية بنت سعود البوسعيدية) is the first Omani woman to be appointed to a ministerial portfolio. Al Busaidi has been Oman's Minister of Higher Education since 8 March 2004, and she is the president of the council of Sultan Qaboos University. She obtained a PhD from Oxford University. Before her appointment as Higher Education Minister, she held the position of higher education undersecretary. She has made great improvements with the state of education in Oman. Women in Oman now pursue careers and professional training, moving from their previous and traditional role at home to the public sphere. In Oman, 17 October is celebrated every year as the Omani Women's Day with various pro-female events. Politics In 1970, the political and social atmosphere of Oman changed with the advent of a new ruler, Sultan Qaboos bin Said, son of the conservative and rigid Said bin Taimur. After decades of stagnant to non-existent growth, Qaboos overthrew his father in a palace coup and immediately began numerous social programs, commissioning hospitals, clinics, schools, etc. Many Omanis who had been living abroad to get a proper education returned to participate in the construction of a new nation. Sultan Qaboos University
Sultan Qaboos University, located in Al Seeb in the Muscat Governorate, is one of the two public universities in the Sultanate of Oman. Most students entering the university are selected based on their performance in high school final examinations. Student enrollment has grown from 500 in 1986 to more than 10,000 in 2005. More than half of the students live off campus due to space constraints. It currently has around 15,357 students of which 7,942 are female students and 7,415 are male students. Al Said Dynasty
The House of Busaid (, ), also known as Al Said dynasty, is the current ruling royal house of the Oman, and former ruling royal house of the Omani Empire (from 1744 to 1856), Sultanate of Muscat and Oman (1856 to 1970) and the Sultanate of Zanzibar (1856 to 1964). It was founded by Ahmad bin Said al-Busaidi, ruler of Oman and its east African territories at the time. The Busaid dynasty traces its roots to the tribes of Azd through a patrilineal ancestor, al-'Atik al-Asad b. Imran, who settled in Dibba (Dabá), hence the band was also known as the "Azd of Daba". Like other Qahtani, the Azd originally hailed from Yemen and migrated north after the destruction of the Marib Dam.
