Ransom B. Moore
Ransom Barbee Moore, or Ranse Moore, (January 29, 1827November 18, 1904) was an American cattle rancher, local politician and Arizona state legislator in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He was one of the earliest settlers of El Monte, California, and was the primary founder of Banning, California, which he initially named Moore City. Within a year the town was renamed in honor of his friend Phineas Banning, the "Father of the Port of Los Angeles". Early years Moore was born to John Moore and Anna Rickman in 1827, the oldest of 12 children. Throughout most of his life he claimed to have been born in St. Joseph, Missouri, but researchers have concluded he more likely was born in Lawrence County, Arkansas. Moore's family relocated to Blanco County, Texas in 1852. Moore joined a wagon train lead by MacCager Johnston and traveled to California. 16th Arizona Territorial Legislature
The 16th Arizona Territorial Legislative Assembly was a session of the Arizona Territorial Legislature which convened in Phoenix, Arizona. The session began on January 19, 1891. Background John N. Irwin had been appointed to replace Lewis Wolfley as Territorial Governor on October 4, 1890. His arrival in the territory had been delayed. First by Irwin taking a brief leave to settle some personal affairs. Then, as soon as his affairs were in order, a member of his family contracted scarlet fever and he was forced to spend a month in medical quarantine. It was not until January 21, 1891, that the new Governor arrived in the territory and was sworn into office. A statehood movement had developed to correct what was perceived as the "second-class" status experienced by territorial citizens. Rio Verde, Arizona
Rio Verde is a master-planned community and census-designated place (CDP) in Maricopa County, Arizona, United States. The population was 2,210 as of the 2020 census, up from 1,811 at the 2010 census. History The area surrounding the Rio Verde community, northeast of Scottsdale, was settled by small farmers in the 1880s, who grew hay and alfalfa to provide for the nearby Fort McDowell US Army camp (1865–1890) (now the Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation). In the late 1890s, Frank Asher and William W. Moore acquired several of the small farm plots on the Verde River, combining them into what became the Box Bar Ranch; Moore later bought out Asher's interest. After his death in 1929, Moore's sons, Glen and Lin Moore, operated the Box Bar as a partnership, under the name "Moore Bros Cattle Co.", with grazing leases both east and west of the Verde River. Apache Wars
The Apache Wars were a series of armed conflicts between the United States Army and various Apache tribal confederations fought in the southwest between 1849 and 1886, though minor hostilities continued until as late as 1924. After the Mexican–American War in 1846, the United States inherited conflicted territory from Mexico which was the home of both settlers and Apache tribes. Conflicts continued as new United States citizens came into traditional Apache lands to raise livestock and crops and to mine minerals. The U.S. Army established forts to fight Apache tribal war parties and force Apaches to move to designated Indian reservations created by the U.S. in accordance with the Indian Removal Act. Some reservations were not on the traditional areas occupied by the Apache. In 1886, the U.S. Army put over 5,000 soldiers in the field to fight, which resulted in the surrender of Geronimo and 30 of his followers.
