Ranging Rook
Ranging Rook or Swinging Rook (振り飛車 ''furibisha'') openings in shogi position the rook to the center or left of the player's board to support an attack there. Ranging Rook strategies used in Ranging Rook vs Static Rook are among the oldest of shogi strategies attested in the historical documents that first describe the rules of shogi around 1600. Description Types of Ranging Rook Traditionally, Ranging Rook has been used as a defensive strategy for White against Static Rook openings played by Black. White's rook can be moved flexibly to counteract Black's attacks. These types of White openings are named simply Ranging Rook (振り飛車 ''furibisha''). In shogi, Fourth File Rook (四間飛車 ''shikenbisha'') is a class of Ranging Rook openings in which the rook is initially positioned on the fourth file if played by White or the sixth file if played by Black. Double Ranging Rook
In shogi, Double Ranging Rook (also Double Swinging Rook, Mutual Swinging Rook) (相振り飛車 ''ai-furibisha'') is a class of Ranging Rook openings in which both players choose a Ranging Rook position. The term does not apply when one player (or both) moves their rook to their respective fourth or third files (Right Fourth File Rook, Sleeve Rook) as these are still considered to be Static Rook positions. Double Ranging Rook games were relatively rare compared with Double Static Rook and Static Rook vs Ranging Rook games. Third File Rook
In shogi, Third File Rook (三間飛車 ''sangenbisha'' or ''sankenbisha'') is a class of Ranging Rook openings in which the rook is positioned on the third file if played by White or the seventh file if played by Black. Types There are two basic forms of Third File Rook. The first form is similar to other normal Ranging Rook openings such as Fourth File Rook. Here, the bishop is moved to the 77 square (Black) or the 33 square (White) often in order to prevent a Static Rook opponent's pawn exchange on the eighth (or second) file. The other Third File Rook form is known as the ''Ishida.'' In contrast, the seventh file pawn (Black) or the third file pawn (White) is pushed up to the fifth rank. Central Rook
In shogi, Central Rook (中飛車 ''nakabisha'') is a subclass of Ranging Rook openings in which the rook is positioned on the fifth (central) file. However, since the central file can be thought of as the dividing line between Ranging Rook and Static Rook positions, it is also possible to find Static Rook positions using a rook that has been moved to the central file. These strategies are generally categorized as subclasses of the particular Static Rook opening. For example, Central Rook Yagura (矢倉中飛車) is a Yagura opening that uses a central rook. Feint Ranging Rook
In shogi, Feint Ranging Rook (陽動振り飛車 ''yōdōfuribisha'') is a Ranging Rook opening in which the player first gives the impression that they are playing a Static Rook position, which subsequently switches to a Ranging Rook position. This strategy is intended to surprise the opponent and hopefully catch the opponent in a suboptimal position. The impression of a Static Rook position is created by pushing the player's rook pawn forward (on the second file is played by Black or the eighth file if played by White). Ishida (shogi)
The ''Ishida'' Opening (石田流三間飛車 ''ishida-ryū sankenbisha'' or shorter form 石田流 ''ishida-ryū'') is a major variation in Third File Rook openings of the Japanese game of '' shōgi''. In the Ishida Opening, in contrast to other Third File Rook openings, the seventh file pawn is advanced to the fifth rank if played by Black (P-75), or the third file pawn if played by White (P-35). This allows the rook to move up to the 76 square (Black) or 34 square (White). History The variation is said to have originated with a blind ''shōgi'' player named Kengyo Ishida in the early Edo period. Takeshi Fujii
is a Japanese professional shogi player, ranked 9-dan. He is a former Ryūō title holder, and a former non-executive director of the Japan Shogi Association. Fujii is known for developing the Fujii System, a class of strategies for Fourth File Rook positions against Static Rook opponents especially Static Rook Anaguma. Shogi professional Fujii's first tournament championship as a professional came in 1996 when he defeated Tadahisa Maruyama 2 games to 1 to win the 27th tournament. The following year, Fujii defended his championship by defeating Mamoru Hatakeyama 2 games to none to win the 28th Shinjin-Ō tournament. Fujii won the tournament for a third time in 1999 when he defeated Kazushiza Horiguchi 2 games to none to win the 30th Shinjin-Ō tournament. In shogi, the Fujii System (藤井システム ''fujii shisutemu'') is a set of Fourth File Rook strategies used against various Static Rook strategies. It was created as a way to attack Static Rook Anaguma castle positions. It is named after Takeshi Fujii who invented the strategies, which awarded him the prestigious Kōzō Masuda Award in 1998. The Mino castle (美濃囲い ''minō gakoi'' or 本美濃囲い ''hon minō gakoi'') is a castle used in shogi.
