The Ranger Nitros were a West Texas League baseball team based in Ranger, Texas, United States that existed from 1920 to 1922. Major league baseball players Tom Lovelace and Jim Galloway played for them (Galloway also managed them in 1920). West Texas League
The West Texas League was a Class D level minor league baseball league that existed from 1920 to 1922 and from 1928 to 1929. 1920-1922 The following teams played in 1920: Abilene Eagles, Ranger Nitros, Mineral Wells Resorters, Cisco Scouts, Gorman Buddies/ Sweetwater Swatters and Eastland Judges. The Abilene Eagles beat the Ranger Nitros in the playoffs to win the league championship. For the 1921 season, the Swatters, Eagles, Resorters, Nitros and Scouts returned to the league. The Resorters moved to Ballinger to become the Ballinger Bearcats. The Cisco Scouts changed their name to the Cisco Orphans. The Eastland Judges left the league and a new team, the San Angelo Bronchos, joined. The Abilene Eagles won their second championship in a row, beating the Swatters. Ranger, Texas
Ranger is a city in Eastland County, Texas, United States. Its population was 2,468 at the 2010 census. Ranger College, a community college, is the second-largest employer in the community. During the 1920s, Ranger, like nearby Cisco, Eastland, and Desdemona, was a petroleum boomtown. History The Texas Pacific Coal Company of Thurber, Texas, drilled a gas well north of Ranger in August 1917, after town civic leaders offered acreage in return for four test wells. Then on 11 October 1917, the McClesky well, 1 mile southwest of Ranger, produced oil at 1200 BOPD. Production came from the Strawn Formation sandstones at , the Smithwick Shale, and the Marble Falls Formation limestone at feet. The Ranger Oil Field production peaked in July 1919 at 80,000 BOPD. Tom Lovelace
Thomas Rivers Lovelace (October 19, 1897 – July 12, 1979) was an American professional baseball player. Lovelace played in the minor leagues for 11 years, from 1920 to 1932, and played in one Major League Baseball game with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1922. Lovelace was born in Wolfe City, Texas, on October 19, 1897. He made his Minor League debut in 1920 as an outfielder for the Ranger Nitros of the West Texas League. He had a .267 batting average in 102 games for the Nitros. In 1922, Lovelace split time with the Greenville Togs and the Dallas Steers. He hit .332 for both teams in 146 games. On September 5, 1922, while playing for Dallas, Lovelace was sold to the Pittsburgh Pirates of the National League. On September 23, 1922, the Pirates were playing the Brooklyn Robins in the first game of a doubleheader at Ebbets Field in Brooklyn and Lovelace made his major league debut. Jim Galloway (baseball)
James Cato "Bad News" Galloway (September 16, 1887 – May 3, 1950) was an American Major League Baseball second baseman who played for the St. Louis Cardinals in 1912. Galloway began his professional career in 1910 and played until 1917. He served in World War I, then returned to professional baseball in 1920, playing until 1929, when he was 41 years old. He made his major league debut on August 24, 1912 and played his final game on October 1 of that year. In 21 games, the 24-year-old hit .185 with no home runs, four RBI, two doubles and two stolen bases in 54 at-bats. In the minor leagues, he played in 2,117 games and hit around .298 with at least 2,265 hits and 159 home runs. He hit over .300 nine times, with a career high of .347 (which he accomplished twice). Over his major league career, Allen batted .130 with three hits in 14 games played. Eastland County is a county located in central West Texas. As of the 2020 census, its population was 17,725. The county seat is Eastland. The county was founded in 1858 and later organized in 1873.
