Randonautica
Randonautica (a portmanteau of "random" + "nautica") is an app launched on February 22, 2020 founded by Auburn Salcedo and Joshua Lengfelder (). It randomly generates coordinates that enable the user to explore their local area and report on their findings. According to its creators, the app is "an attractor of strange things," letting one choose specific coordinates based on a certain theme. It has gained controversy after several reports on the app generating coordinates, seemingly coincidentally, where disturbing things were present. Overview The app, which creators claim to be inspired by chaos theory and Guy Debord's Theory of the Derive, offers its users three types of coordinates to choose from: an attractor, a void, or an anomaly. Dérive
The ''dérive'' (, "drift") is a revolutionary strategy originally put forward in the "Theory of the Dérive" (1956) by Guy Debord, a member at the time of the Letterist International. Debord defines the ''dérive'' as "a mode of experimental behaviour linked to the conditions of urban society: a technique of rapid passage through varied ambiances." It is an unplanned journey through a landscape, usually urban, in which participants drop their everyday relations and "let themselves be drawn by the attractions of the terrain and the encounters they find there". Duwamish Head
Duwamish Head is the northernmost point in West Seattle, Washington, jutting into Elliott Bay. The Duwamish called it "Low Point" or "Base of the Point" (Lushootseed: sgWudaqs). A large boulder covered with petroglyphs once lay on the beach. The Duwamish tribe was relocated to a reservation here in 1856, which at the time was referred to as Holderness Point. From 1907 to 1913 it was the site of an amusement park, Luna Park. Today Alki Beach Park extends southwestward from Duwamish Head to Alki Point; the area at the head is sometimes called "Anchor Park" due to the anchor at the site. On June 19, 2020, two teens, utilizing the app, Randonautica, reported finding a suitcase along the shoreline, emitting a foul odor. Geohashing is an outdoor recreational activity inspired by the webcomic ''xkcd'', in which participants have to reach a random location (chosen by a computer algorithm), prove their achievement by taking a picture of a Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver or another mobile device and then tell the story of their trip online. Proof based on non-electronic navigation is also acceptable. The geohashing community and culture is extremely tongue-in-cheek, supporting any kind of humorous behavior during the practice of geohashing and resulting in a parody of traditional outdoor activities.
