Randolph Stewart, 13th Earl Of Galloway
Randolph Keith Reginald Stewart, 13th Earl of Galloway, Lord of Garlies, Baronet of Corsewell and Burray (14 October 1928 – 27 March 2020) was a Scottish nobleman. Life Stewart was born in October 1928, the only son of the 12th Earl of Galloway and his American wife Philipa Wendell. He was diagnosed as schizophrenic (this diagnosis later rejected as having been hastily made and inaccurate) at a young age, and subjected to insulin coma therapy. It is possible that had he been born today his behaviour would have been recognised as autistic. He was educated at Belhaven Hill School in Dunbar, and at Harrow School in London. In 1952, at the age of twenty-three, his parents had him lobotomised in an attempt to control his behaviour. Randolph Algernon Ronald Stewart, 9th Earl of Galloway (16 September 1800 – 2 January 1873) was the Lord Lieutenant of Kirkcudbright from 1828 to 1845; and of Wigton from 1828 to 1851. He was styled Viscount Garlies from 1806 to 1834. Early life He was born on 16 September 1800. He was the eldest son of eight children born to George Stewart, 8th Earl of Galloway and his wife Lady Jane Paget. Among his siblings was sisters, Lady Jane Stewart, who married George Spencer-Churchill, 6th Duke of Marlborough, and Lady Louisa Stewart, who married William Duncombe, 2nd Baron Feversham. His younger brother, Vice Admiral Hon. Keith Stewart, was married to Mary FitzRoy, daughter of Charles Augustus FitzRoy. His paternal grandparents were John Stewart, 7th Earl of Galloway, and Anne, daughter of Sir James Dashwood, 2nd Baronet. Randolph Algernon Ronald Stewart, 12th Earl of Galloway (21 November 1892 – 13 June 1978) was the son of Randolph Stewart, 11th Earl of Galloway, styled Viscount Garlies from 1901 to 1920. Early life His father, the second son of the 9th Earl of Galloway, inherited the earldom upon the death of his uncle, Alan Stewart, 10th Earl of Galloway, in 1901. He was educated at Harrow School, followed by the Royal Military College, Sandhurst, from where he graduated and was commissioned into the Scots Guards. He served with the regiment during World War I. Career Upon the outbreak of World War II, he served as the first Commanding Officer of the 7th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers. Randolph Henry Stewart, 11th Earl of Galloway (14 October 1836 – 7 February 1920) was a Scottish first-class cricketer and British Army officer. Early life The son of Randolph Stewart, 9th Earl of Galloway and his wife, Lady Harriett Blanche Somerset, he was born at Galloway House in October 1836. He was educated at Harrow School. He played first-class cricket for the Gentlemen of England in 1856, making two appearances against the Gentlemen of Surrey and Sussex at Lord's and the Gentlemen of Kent and Sussex at Canterbury. Career After leaving Harrow, Stewart enlisted in the British Army as an ensign in the 42nd Highlanders in March 1855, with promotion to the rank of lieutenant coming without purchase in August 1855. Stewart saw action during the latter stages of the Crimean War and was present at the Siege and Fall of Sevastopol, with the Ottoman Empire decorating him with the Turkish Crimea Medal.
