Ranch To Market Road 337
Ranch to Market Road 337 (RM 337) is a ranch-to-market road in the U.S. state of Texas that runs from Camp Wood east to Medina. The route was designated in 1945 between Camp Wood and Leakey in Real County, but was gradually extended eastward over the years until in 1968 it stretched to RM 187 at Vanderpool in Bandera County. In 1976, an additional were added east from RM 187 to connect to SH 16 in Medina, bringing the road to its present form. Passing through the canyonland of the Texas Hill Country northwest of San Antonio, RM 337 is known for its hairpin switchbacks and natural environment; it has been called one of the most scenic drives in Texas. Vanderpool is a small unincorporated community in Bandera County in the Texas Hill Country, which is part of the Edwards Plateau. It is considered part of the San Antonio Metropolitan Statistical Area. Although it is unincorporated, Vanderpool has a post office, with the ZIP code of 78885. According to the Handbook of Texas, Vanderpool had a population of 22 in 1990. Hunting, ranching and tourism are prime contributors to the regional economy. History On August 18, 1849, José Texaso was given a land grant by the Republic of Texas, which then was patented by his assignee, John W. Smith. The Texas Hill Country is a geographic region of Central and South Texas, forming the southeast part of the Edwards Plateau. Medina is an unincorporated community in Bandera County, Texas, United States. It is part of the San Antonio Metropolitan Statistical Area. Medina is famous for its apples. The community's population was estimated to be 515 in 2000. History Several families had settled in the community and a sawmill was built in Medina around 1865. A post office was established at Medina in 1880 and developed a gin, a corn mill, a hotel, a private bank, three general stores, and two churches serving 150 residents by the end of the next decade. Many residents were farmers who raised livestock. The population of Medina jumped to 400 by 1914, which then plunged to 250 when the Great Depression forced people to search for new jobs in the early 1930s. Leakey ( ) is a city in and the county seat of Real County, Texas, United States. The population was 425 at the 2010 census. The city is named for John H. Leakey (1824–1900), a pioneer from Tennessee. The Alto Frio Baptist Encampment is located to the southeast of the community.
