The Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya (, English: "National Art Museum of Catalonia"), abbreviated as MNAC, is a museum of Catalan visual art located in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain. Third Siege Of Gerona
The third siege of Girona occurred in northern Catalonia, Spain from 6 May to 12 December 1809, during the Napoleonic Wars. A significant event of the Peninsular War, France's Grande Armée lay siege to the town of Girona for seven months. Girona was strategically important because it controlled the main road between France and Spain. Some 32,000 French and Westphalian troops besieged the town. General Laurent de Gouvion Saint-Cyr was in command of the French during much of the siege. Marshal Pierre Augereau took command after 12 October. The Girona defense was under General Mariano Álvarez de Castro, with about 9,000 regular troops and militiamen. Girona held out until disease and famine compelled it to capitulate. ''The Great Day of Girona'', originally ''El gran dia de Girona'' (), is a large oil painting (4.96 × 10.82 m) by Ramon Martí Alsina depicting an important victory of Girona's defenders over the French during the Third Siege of Girona in 1809. Completed in 1864, it is the largest easel painting in the history of Catalonia, Catalan art. The creation process took more than 10 years and led the artist nearly to financially ruin on several occasions. The painting became part of the collection of the Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya, and it is on permanent display in the Girona in an auditorium of the Generalitat de Catalunya, Catalan Government building. The Spanish Republic ( es, República Española), historiographically referred to as the First Spanish Republic, was the political regime that existed in Spain from 11 February 1873 to 29 December 1874. The Spanish Constitution of 1869 ( es, Constitucion Española), enacted on 1 June 1869, was the sixth constitution of the constitutions of Spain to emerge from the turbulent period in Spanish history of 1814-1873. The constitution was adopted by the Spanish Provisional Government of 1868-1871 which was formed after the successful Glorious Revolution of 1868 that ended the autocratic reign of Isabel II of Spain, creating a constitutional monarchy, with Marshal Francisco Serrano, 1st Duke of la Torre as regent, recognizing the freedom of religion for the first time.
