Ramenskoye, Moscow Oblast
Ramenskoye (russian: Ра́менское, ) is a town and the administrative center of Ramensky District in Moscow Oblast, Russia, located southeast of Moscow. Population Population: 69,000 (1974); 28,000 (1939). Etymology The town's name derives from an Old Slavonic word "" (''ramenye''), meaning "on the edge of forest". History The area where the town now stands was first mentioned in 1328. A stone church was built here by Count Platon Musin-Pushkin in 1725–1730. In the 1770s, the '' selo'' of Novo-Troitskoye (russian: Ново-Троицкое) was established here; its name later changed to Ramenskoye. In 1831, a textile factory was founded in Ramenskoye and by the second half of the 19th century, it had grown to be one of the largest enterprises in the Russian Empire. Johnny Ramensky
Johnny Ramensky MM, also known as John Ramsay, Gentleman Johnny, and Gentle Johnny (6 April 1906 – 4 November 1972) was a Scottish career criminal who used his safe-cracking abilities as a commando during the Second World War. A popular song about him, "The Ballad of Johnny Ramensky", was written in 1959 by Norman Buchan, later to become a Labour Party member of parliament, and recorded by singer Enoch Kent, Buchan's brother-in-law. Though a career criminal, Ramensky received the nickname "Gentle Johnny" as he never used violence when being apprehended by the police. Early life Ramensky was born Yonas Ramanauckas or Jonas Ramanauckas, the son of Lithuanian immigrant parents, at Glenboig, a mining village in North Lanarkshire, near Coatbridge. His father died when Ramensky was about eight and the remaining family moved to the Gorbals, in the south side of Glasgow. Leonty Ramensky
Leonty Grigoryevich Ramensky (russian: Лео́нтий Григо́рьевич Ра́менский; – January 27, 1953) was a plant ecologist who conceived several important ideas that were overlooked in the West and later ’re-invented’ by western scientists. He lived in the Russian Empire and later the Soviet Union. He graduated from the Petrograd University in 1916 and obtained a Ph.D. in biology in 1935. From 1911 to 1928 he worked in the Research Institute of the Voronezh Gouvernement (now Voronezh State University) and from 1928 in the State Grassland Institute (later All-union Scientific Research Institute of Forages dedicated to V.R.Williams). Ramensky was a proponent of the view that biotic communities consist of species behaving individualistically (much like Henry Gleason in the U.S.A.).
