Rambagh Palace
The Rambagh Palace in Jaipur, Rajasthan is the former residence of the Maharaja of Jaipur located outside the walls of the city of Jaipur on Bhawani Singh road. History The first building on the site was a garden house built in 1835 for the wet nurse of prince Ram Singh II. In 1887, during the reign of Maharaja Thakur Sawai Madho Singh, it was converted into a modest royal hunting lodge, as the house was located in the midst of a thick forest at that time. In the early 20th century, it was expanded into a palace to the designs of Sir Samuel Swinton Jacob. Maharajah Sawai Man Singh II made Rambagh his principal residence and added a number of royal suites in 1931. It is now operated as a five-star hotel by the Taj Hotels Group. Anderson Cooper stayed at the Rambagh Palace in 2009. Raj Mahal
Raj Mahal is the palace of the erstwhile Maharaja of Jaipur in Jaipur, Rajasthan. History The original construction dates back to 1729 and was renovated and changed over time. In 1821 it became the official residence of the British resident of Rajputana. It was renovated into the Art Deco style. After independence in 1958 Maharaja Sawai Man Singh II made it into his private residence. Visitors included Queen Elizabeth II and The Duke of Edinburgh, Jackie Kennedy, the Shah of Iran, Lord Mountbatten and Lady Mountbatten, Charles, Prince of Wales and Princess Diana. The City Palace, Jaipur was established at the same time as the city of Jaipur, by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II, who moved his court to Jaipur from Amber, in 1727. Jaipur is the present-day capital of the state of Rajasthan, and until 1949 the City Palace was the ceremonial and administrative seat of the Maharaja of Jaipur. The Palace was also the location of religious and cultural events, as well as a patron of arts, commerce, and industry. Major General Maharaja Sawai Man Singh II GCSI GCIE (born Sawai Mor Mukut Singh; 21 August 1912 – 24 June 1970) was an Indian prince, government official, diplomat and sportsman. Man Singh II was the ruling Maharaja of the princely state of Jaipur in the British Raj from 1922 to 1947.
