Ramaria Subbotrytis
''Ramaria subbotrytis'' is a species of coral fungus in the family Gomphaceae. It was previously classified in the family Ramariaceae, and before that in the genus Clavaria, family Clavariaceae. It was originally species description, described as ''Clavaria subbotrytis'' by William Chambers Coker in 1923 from collections made in North Carolina. E.J.H. Corner transferred it to the genus ''Ramaria'' in 1950. ''Ramaria subbotrytis'' accumulates arsenic and besides arsenic species known to be found in macrofungi, such as arsenobetaine, contains a very unusual organoarsenic compound homoarsenocholine. It grows in association with trees, especially conifers. The species is listed as Edible mushroom, edible by some sources. William Chambers Coker
William Chambers Coker (October 24, 1872 – June 26, 1953) was an American botanist and mycologist. Biography He was born at Hartsville, South Carolina on October 24, 1872. He graduated from South Carolina College in 1894 and took postgraduate courses at Johns Hopkins University and in Germany. He taught for several years in the summer schools of the Brooklyn Institute of Arts and Sciences, at Cold Spring Harbor, L. I., and in 1902 became associate professor of botany at the University of North Carolina. He established the Coker Arboretum in 1903. He was made professor in 1907 and Kenan professor of botany in 1920. In 1903, he was chief of the botanic staff of the Bahama Expedition of the Geographical Society of Baltimore. Professor Coker was a member of many scientific societies and the author of ''The Plant Life of Hartsville, S. C.'' ''Ramaria botrytis'', commonly known as the clustered coral, the pink-tipped coral mushroom, or the cauliflower coral, is an edible species of coral fungus in the family Gomphaceae. Its robust fruit body can grow up to in diameter and tall, and resembles some marine coral. Its dense branches, which originate from a stout, massive base, are swollen at the tips and divided into several small branchlets. A clamp connection is a hook-like structure formed by growing hyphal cells of certain fungi. It is a characteristic feature of Basidiomycetes fungi.
